Community Cook of the Month
Shawna Welsh-Garrison from Owasso, Oklahoma
Born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Shawna loves the outdoors and cooking good food for the people she loves. Spending time with her family and creating memories is very important to her. She believes that food is the one thing that brings everyone together any time of the year, and sharing meals helps create bonds that can last a lifetime.
Taste of Home:Â How long have you been a fan of Taste of Home?
Shawna Welsh-Garrison: I’ve been a huge fan since the mid-90s. My mom would pass copies of the magazine to me after she was done with them. As a young mom at the time, I always looked forward to getting them from her because the recipes were always so easy to make and the ingredients were never hard to find. It always took the guesswork out of what I would be making for dinner throughout the week.
TOH: How did you learn to cook?
SWG: My parents were both excellent cooks. They’re definitely the two main people who influenced my love of food and cooking. They were always in the kitchen making something and would encourage my sisters and me to help out and try new things. My father was a retired military man who spent most of his 23 years during his service overseas. His international exposure certainly helped bring a variety of different dishes into our household that we may not have had otherwise.
TOH: Who do you love to cook for the most?
SWG: I love cooking for my family and friends. A home-cooked meal is a very powerful thing—it brings people together, in all cultures around the world. Meals not only nourish our bodies and souls, but they also reignite memories from our childhood or a beloved family member. The most-loved meals I make for my family are undeniably parts of my family’s heritage. The smiles on their faces make it all worthwhile.
TOH: What type of recipes are you known for?
SWG: Comfort foods! Many of the most loved and requested recipes from my family and get-togethers are for dishes like chicken and dumplings, chicken pot pie, roasted chicken, beef stew, macaroni and cheese, smoked meatloaf and banana bread, to name a few. All the types of food that make you feel warm on a cold day or remind you of being at home again.
