When you’re on a food plan as low carb as the keto diet, a craving for bread can strike with a vengeance. That’s why we made this recipe for keto bread that uses keto-friendly ingredients so you can stay on track with your goals—each hearty serving has only 8 grams of carbs.
Keto bread mimics the look and taste of sandwich bread and is just as deliciously golden brown and wholesome. It can be hard to find good low-carb bread recipes and products to supplement a carb craving, but we made sure this keto bread satisfies.
What is keto bread?
Keto bread is a low-carb bread that’s specially formulated for followers of the keto diet. The keto diet focuses on eating foods rich in fat—like eggs, butter, cheese and meat—while strictly forbidding anything with processed sugar and syrups.
Another rule is that you can eat up to only 30 grams of net carbs per day. With such a low carb number, keto dieters turn to low-carb, keto-friendly bread and pasta when the carb-craving strikes. Our keto bread recipe meets the keto criteria with only 8 grams of carbs per slice.
Keto Bread Ingredients
- Almond flour: Check the bag to make sure you’re buying almond flour, not almond meal. Almond meal is the product of almonds that are ground with their skin on. Almond flour is made from blanched almonds that are a bit more finely ground than almond meal. Almond flour produces a loaf that’s lighter in weight and color.
- Flaxseed: Ground flaxseeds act as a binding agent, plus they add fiber and a hearty texture.
- Baking powder: Check the expiration date on your box of baking powder to make sure it’s not expired. If it is, your keto bread loaf will not rise.
- Eggs: You’ll need five eggs for this keto bread recipe. Bring them to room temperature so they create a better batter and an overall better loaf of bread.
- Butter: If you’re on the keto diet, you’re probably going through a lot of butter! Use a good butter brand for all your keto recipes, and especially for this keto bread.
Directions
Step 1: Prepare the pan
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line an 8×4-inch loaf pan with parchment.
Step 2: Create the batter
In a large bowl, whisk together the almond flour, flaxseed, baking powder and salt. In another bowl, whisk together the room-temperature eggs, warm water and melted butter.
Stir the wet mixture into the dry mixture until everything is evenly combined.
Step 3: Bake the loaf
Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake the loaf until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 45 to 50 minutes. Cool in the pan at room temperature for five minutes. Remove the loaf from the pan and place it on a wire rack to cool to room temperature.
Recipe Variations
- Add in herbs: Herbaceous dried herbs add a ton of flavor without adding calories. Try dried oregano, thyme, marjoram, rosemary or basil. Or, use an Italian seasoning blend or an herbes de Provence blend.
- Brighten with zest: Grate a lemon or orange on a Microplane or along the small holes of a box grater, then add the zest to the batter. It’s an easy, subtle way to freshen the bread with a bright, citrusy note.
- Use olive oil: Swap in a good olive oil for the melted butter if desired.
How to Store Keto Bread
Refrigerate keto bread for up to one week. Allow the loaf to cool completely to room temperature, then wrap it tightly in storage wrap. Avoid slicing the bread all at once, instead slice only as you need it.
Can you freeze keto bread?
Yes, you can freeze keto bread for up to two months. Once it’s out of the oven, allow it to cool to room temperature, then wrap the loaf tightly in two layers of storage wrap. When you’re ready to enjoy it, thaw the bread overnight in the fridge.
You could also slice the bread, place pieces of parchment in between each slice, then wrap the entire loaf tightly in two layers of storage wrap. That way you can grab a slice straight from the freezer as you need it. Just warm it in the toaster or microwave before enjoying.
Keto Bread Tips
How can you use keto bread?
This keto bread recipe can be used similarly to sandwich bread. Of course, keto bread makes the perfect morning toast or lunchtime sandwich. We also love to turn the slices into single servings of garlic bread and then serve them with keto chili, soups and stews.
You could also cube the bread and bake it into crunchy croutons for keto salads, like our avocado turkey salad, or use the cubes to make a keto bread pudding.
Is keto bread gluten-free?
Our recipe for keto bread is gluten-free if you purchase almond flour and flaxseeds that are certified gluten-free. All foods on the keto diet food list are non-gluten-containing ingredients. However, some foods are manufactured in facilities that process wheat and gluten, which can be harmful to celiacs. If you’re feeding someone who eats gluten-free, be sure to double-check the processed ingredients for a certified gluten-free label.
