For many grilling enthusiasts, nothing compares to grilling with charcoal. Charcoal is approachable, providing exceptional flavor and control over quick sears or slow cooks. And consistently at the top of the list of the best charcoal grills? Weber Grills has taken the top spot for decades thanks to the brand’s recognizable kettle grill design.

In testing the best Weber Grills, grilling expert and Taste of Home Test Kitchen team member Catherine Ward found the Weber Performer charcoal grill to be the best pick for its ease of assembly and use, sturdy, clever design and excellent performance when cooking steak, chicken and baby back ribs. Here’s what we found out while testing.

What is the Weber Performer?

Weber is well-known for its iconic dome-shaped kettle grill design. It’s the same design that has been going strong for the last 70-plus years. And while the original Weber Kettle grill is an excellent budget-friendly option, the 22-inch Weber Performer is the ultimate upgrade. The charcoal grill is designed with the same classic dome shape, but instead of a three-legged system, it is built into a four-legged cart with wheels on each leg. The grill is also designed with a holder to easily move the lid over while checking on what you’re grilling, along with a side prep table that folds down and utility hooks for grilling tools and accessories. It has a 363-square-inch cooking surface to cook everything from multiple burgers and chicken legs to a small grilled pizza.

Weber Performer Features

Weber charcoal grills are constructed from steel, and the Weber Performer has a porcelain enamel coating to maximize heat retention while also protecting the exterior against rust or other damage. Inside, there are heavy-duty grates designed with a hinge system. This allows you to add more charcoal while grilling. You can also customize the way you use the grill by removing the center grate and adding a Weber grill accessory such as a griddle.

The Test Kitchen noted the convenience of the side table, which was very sturdy. The locking wheels made it easy to move and then lock and keep in place.

When the grill is lit, the temperature can be read on the built-in thermometer on top. If you need to adjust the temperature, the top and bottom vents, each with silicone handles, are easily accessible and safe to touch when in use.

How We Tested the Weber Performer

Toha24 Weberperformer10 Taste Of Home 01 Ssedit

The first step in testing the Weber Performer charcoal grill was to see how simple it was to assemble straight out of the box. There weren’t too many parts to put together with this grill, and the instructions were clear. The Test Kitchen noted that it was simpler to put together than the Original Weber Kettle Grill, and the spinning wheels made for easy access and movement while assembling.

This grill was tested with a variety of foods and cooking methods. Grilling expert Catherine Ward cooked a 1 1/2-inch steak on high heat at 450 degrees, searing each side for one minute and cooking the steak covered for four minutes in between each sear. It took one hour to cook a whole cut-up chicken at a medium temperature of 350 degrees. Baby back ribs were also cooked on the charcoal grill at a low and slow temperature of 275 degrees for three hours.

During cooking, Catherine found it easy to control and maintain the grill’s temperature by adjusting the vents; additional charcoal didn’t need to be added while cooking. It took less than 10 minutes to get the grill up to the desired temperature, and the grill stayed consistent the entire cook time. The steak test resulted in a juicy steak with a beautiful sear on both sides, while the tender ribs had light grill marks. The chicken had crisp, browned skin with grill marks and a juicy, tender texture. Catherine also loved the convenient hooks for holding go-to grilling tools.

Weber Performer Charcoal Grill

Cleaning the Weber Performer grill after cooking was simple with a grill brush, and the grates were not scratched by the bristles of the brush. The grease drip tray at the base of the grill was big enough to catch all of the drips while cooking, and it was easy to remove the solidified grease when cleaning out the tray.

After a week of reviewing in our Outdoor Test Kitchen, Catherine then took the grill home for further evaluation. She’s particularly smitten with all the features on this charcoal grill, noting it’s a nice step up from a standard kettle grill. “The lid cradle makes it easy to store the lid when the grill is uncovered; the removable center grate for indirect grilling is a very useful feature; the silicone handle on the lid vent means you can adjust the vents without getting burned or having to use tongs to adjust it,” Catherine says. “I have used and appreciated all of these features when testing.”

Catherine also appreciates all the storage the Performer offers. “The hinged side table is very sturdy, so I can easily load a pan or platter with food on and off the grill. I have the table folded down for a smaller footprint when storing. There is a rack under the grill which is handy too; I store my chimney starter there. There are also hooks on the front of the grill to hang utensils and grill brush that I use while cooking,” she explains. The cherry on top? “The large wheels make moving this grill a cinch. I store my grills in a different area of my patio than where I cook, so moving smoothly is a huge plus for me.”

Pros

  • Easy and intuitive to use
  • Sturdy design with 4 wheeled legs
  • Sturdy, large folding side table for prep
  • Cradle to hold lid when opening the grill

Cons

  • No char basket included for indirect cooking

Product Comparison

The best grills are simple and safe to use, perform well and can be cleaned easily. The Weber Performer grill is an excellent choice for those who love charcoal grilling but want upgraded features. It has all of the intuitive, easy-to-use features of the Original Weber Kettle Grill, but with helpful additions such as the folding side table and rolling legs so you can use your grill anywhere in a variety of ways. It functions very similarly to any charcoal grill but comes with the same clever design that Weber has been known for over decades of use.

Because charcoal grills can simply be turned on and off, they have a bit more of a learning curve in controlling temperature and managing the flame compared to gas grills. However, because of its design and features, the Weber Performer charcoal grill would be a good fit for beginners just getting started cooking with charcoal.

Final Verdict

The Weber Performer charcoal grill offers all the benefits of exceptional flavor you get from a charcoal grill, coupled with helpful temperature control and additional features such as easy-to-roll wheels and a folding side table. It’s all that people love in the iconic Weber Kettle Grill, but with clever, convenient upgrades to make a grilling session that much more fun.

A gas grill is an incredibly versatile cooking tool. It allows you to prepare plenty of cheeseburgers for a crowd, sear steaks for dinner and even grill summer fruits like peaches for dessert. While many of the best grills may take up a lot of space on your deck or in the backyard, the Weber Spirit II E-310 isn’t one of them.

As a grilling enthusiast, I’m impressed with how powerful this three-burner grill is for cooking while still being compact enough to leave out on a patio, deck or anywhere else in the yard. Test Kitchen grilling expert Catherine Ward was impressed with its quick heating time and design, noting it was the best grill for small backyards on our list of the best Weber Grills. Here’s what we learned while testing.

What is the Weber Spirit II E-310?

The Weber Spirit II E-310 is a workhorse of a gas grill, offering impressive power in a compact design. With the lid open, the grill is 52 inches wide by 57 inches tall and 26 inches deep. It has a sturdy, solid design with three temperature control knobs on the front panel to change the temperature of each of the grill’s three burners. There are folding shelves on either side of the grill for food prep and hooks for holding grilling tools and accessories for easy access. The grill is powered by propane and hooks up to the tank with a hose. It has a strong bottom shelf to set things on for storage, along with two built-in wheels to be able to move the grill to another location with assistance if needed.

This spacious 3-burner cooking area means you can sear steaks on one side while grilling an appetizer on the other.

Weber Spirit II E-310 Features

This grill offers versatility and power in a compact design. While the grill won’t take up too much space in the backyard, it still features three burners with 30,000 BTUs across a large 424-square-inch cooking area. The grill is easy and intuitive to light with the ignition button on the front, and the three burners can be adjusted on their own, allowing you to sear a steak at high temperatures on one side and grill corn at a lower temperature on the other all at once. You could also use Weber grill accessories at different temperatures, such as pressing burgers while cooking diced vegetables in a grill basket. There is a built-in thermometer on the lid of the grill and a hook for hanging your propane tank with a fuel gauge, so you know just how much grilling time you have left before needing to refill.

The grill’s interior is designed with cast-iron cooking grates for supreme heat retention. The grates are porcelain-enameled, providing protection for the cast iron and making it easier to clean them after your grilling session. The grill also has a lower main cooking area and an upper rack warming area to hold cooked food until it’s time to dig in.

How We Tested the Weber Spirit II E-310

Spirit Grill

The Weber Spirit II E-310 was first assessed based on how simple the assembly was straight out of the box. Our Test Kitchen found that there were a lot of steps to put together this grill. However, each was clearly defined, and ultimately, the grill came together fairly easily.

To test performance, grilling expert Catherine Ward prepped a variety of BBQ foods. She cooked a steak on high heat at 500 degrees to achieve a good sear. It took two minutes to sear on each side, with a four-minute long covered cook between each sear. Catherine also whipped up a rack of baby back ribs, finding it took two hours to perfectly cook the ribs at a low and slow temperature of 225 degrees. She also grilled a whole cut-up chicken. The chicken was cooked on medium heat at 350 degrees for 45 minutes, and the grill produced a delicious meal with light areas of charring and excellent flavor.

Toha24 Weber Spirit Ii E 310 Katie Bandurski Ssedit 03

The grill was also assessed based on its ease of cleaning the grill grates and emptying the grease drip.

After the initial testing in our outdoor Test Kitchen, the Spirit grill made its way to Editorial Coordinator and long-term tester Sydney Manning. Sydney has used the grill a handful of times to prep chicken wings, steak kabobs, burgers and asparagus.

“This grill is very nice and easy to use,” says Sydney. It was easy to set up the propane tank and attach it. The burners turned on right away and were ready to go. It does a great job and is priced well.” Sydney’s favorite feature is the built-in lid thermometer, which makes it easy to keep an eye on the temperature of her food as it cooks. To clean, she recommends picking up a bristle-free grill brush.

Pros

  • Powerful 30,000 BTU across 3 burners
  • Folding side shelves and hooks for storage and prep
  • Built-in thermometer and propane fuel gauge
  • 10-year warranty

Cons

  • Only two wheels for limited mobility

Product Comparison

Weber is well-known for its charcoal grills, which allow for flame-grilled cooking. However, the Weber Spirit II E-310 is part of the gas grills line-up. It still features the same quality construction but can only be used when hooked up to a propane tank. This may make grilling simpler, especially for beginners, as the learning curve isn’t quite as steep when grilling on gas in comparison to managing charcoal or trying your hand at smoking on a Traeger grill.

In comparison to other Weber gas grills, this is one of the most compact. It takes up far less space compared to the Weber Genesis E-325 but still has three burners and almost as high of BTU performance. Compared to the Napoleon Grills Rogue 425 with three burners, it also comes in at a lower price point. Its smaller design allows for better versatility of use, making it possible to use the grill in smaller spaces such as a balcony or patio.

Final Verdict

The Weber Spirit II E-310 is an excellent choice for those looking for their first gas grill. It’s also a great option for someone who wants a grill that performs well at powerful, high temperatures without taking up too much space. It provides the ideal balance between performance and space-saving in the yard. The low-profile design is slim enough to fit on patios, decks or in other backyard spaces, and the side tables fold down to make for even more space.

When it comes to cooking outside, there are plenty of options. Firing up the best charcoal grill provides great flavor and a novel experience. But a gas grill is the perfect fit if you’re looking for convenience and ease of use. The best gas grills provide a mixture of performance and power, which allows you to ignite at the touch of a button.

As a grilling enthusiast, I’m impressed with the sear zone on the Weber Genesis E-325 for even more cooking options. Test Kitchen grilling expert, Catherine Ward, was impressed with its large grilling area, attractive design and sturdy buildnoting it was the best overall gas grill on our list of the best Weber grills. Here’s what we learned about this top-notch grill while testing.

What is the Weber Genesis E-325?

Part of Weber’s Genesis line of gas grills, the Genesis E-325 is a mid-size grill. It is designed with a sleek black and silver steel exterior and a storage cabinet at the base so you can tuck away the propane tank and have room left for other grilling accessories. The grill has sturdy tables on each side, simplifying prep and cooking. It features four wheels for mobility, all of which lock in place so the grill stays put once you’ve found the perfect spot on your patio. There is a built-in thermometer on the top of the grill, and both the temperature dials and the ignition switch are located on the front for convenient access.

The extra-large sear zone delivers legendary Weber quality, performance and durability in a grill you can rely on.

Weber Genesis E-325 Features

The Genesis E-325 has three burners, cranking at 39,000 BTUs for powerful performance. Inside, it has heavy-duty cast-iron grill grates for excellent heat retention, which are porcelain enamel-coated to make cleaning easier. The grill has a cooking area of 531 square inches, with 513 square inches comprising the three-burner main cooking area. The sear zone is concentrated, delivering 13,000 BTUs for high heat searing of steaks. There is also a 128-square-inch warming rack to keep cooked food warm before serving. The cabinet’s design below provides extra covered space to store Weber grilling accessories, so they’re easily in reach.

How We Tested the Weber Genesis E-325

Toha24 Weber Genesis E 325 Benjamin Landwehr Ssedit 02

To assess this gas grill, the Taste of Home Test Kitchen first evaluated it by ease of assembly. Although there were many parts to this grill, the directions were clear, and the parts were labeled to make assembly simpler.

Then, it was time to get cooking! Test Kitchen pro Catherine Ward grilled a 1 1/2-inch thick steak on high heat at 500 degrees on this grill. With a two-minute sear on each side and a four-minute covered cook between sears, she found that this grill produced steakhouse-quality sears for excellent flavor. A whole cut-up chicken was cooked at a medium heat of 350 degrees for 45 minutes, resulting in a deep golden mahogany color without being overly charred. It had excellent color and deep, delicious flavor.

While testing this grill, Catherine found that it took about 5 minutes to get it up to temperature each time, and it maintained temperature perfectly. The grilling surface provided plenty of space between the grates and the warming rack, allowing room for flipping and basting items while cooking. There was also plenty of space between burners for indirect grilling without charring cooked items. This makes the grill versatile for a variety of cooking needs, whether you’re cooking straight on the grates or using a grilling basket or cast-iron griddle.

Overall, the grill was easy to clean with a grill brush to remove stuck-on food. Grease is directed into a drip tray with a disposable foil liner to make cleanup that much simpler.

Toha24 Weber Genesis E 325 Benjamin Landwehr Ssedit 03

Once initial testing in our Outdoor Product Testing Lab was complete, Catherine took the grill home for additional long-term testing. She’s used it over a dozen times to prep salmon, pork chops, burgers, brats, chicken breasts, veggies, corn on the cob and steak. Whew!

“Ive used the sear zone on pork chops and steaks for a quicker cook. I really appreciate that I can get a good sear without overcooking,” Catherine says. “I also like the warming rack. It is narrow and can be used as is, or you can easily fold it out for a deeper area. I have used that for brats and burgers when some are done sooner than others. It means I can keep them warm instead of removing them to a platter and risking a cool-down before I serve them.”

Catherine also loves that the grill heats up quickly so she can get dinner started in a snap. It also cools down quickly. “With two side tables, there is plenty of room to hold everything I need while grilling. I really like the large cabinet under the grill for storing my grill brush and grilling utensils,” she notes.” Another great feature is the hook that holds the propaneit measures the fullness of the tank. No need to open the cabinet to check as there is a red arrow on the exterior.”

Pros

  • Reaches temperature in 5 minutes
  • Concentrated 13,000 BTUs sear zone
  • Flavorizer bars catch and vaporize juices, boosting grilled flavor
  • Large, sturdy side tables and cabinet for storage
  • Easy-to-clean grease drip system

Cons

  • A lot of parts for assembly

Fancy a piece of toast? When it’s time for breakfast, nothing satisfies like this classic on-the-go meal. A perfect piece of bread topped with a portion of your preferred spreadbe it butter, jam or cinnamon sugarjust hits the spot. Not to mention the fact that the right toaster cranks out crazy good waffles and piping hot pastries when the mood strikes. However, finding an appliance that delivers precise crunchiness without over-the-top bells and whistles often means settling for less stylish budget options.

You can certainly snag a cheap toaster that burns bread and breaks down after a year of use. Orhear us outenjoy a perfectly even kiss of golden brown made by the Corvette of toasters. The SMEG toaster may be a bit pricey, but this stylish and durable gadget is truly worth the splurge. Here’s why our Product Testing Team gives this classy toaster three thumbs up.

What is the SMEG Toaster?

The SMEG toaster is a beautiful appliance with rounded corners and a shiny chrome finish. The top is brushed or satin, depending on the chosen color. It comes in 11 different shades, including light blue, pink, cream, chrome, gold, pastel green, champagne, red, black and slate gray. The cute rounded lever and mirror finish give this toaster a distinctive style that echos retro appliances.

In addition to its charming looks, each component is thoughtfully designed. The shade knob is substantial and easy to turn, and beneath the toaster are four very solid silicone feet that prevent it from slipping and sliding. Settings include a defrost and bagel button, plus a browning control knob with six darkness choices and a stop function.

It arrives in a secure brown shipping box. Inside is a branded box with a molded cardboard insert for security. The toaster is wrapped in a cloth-like branded bag for additional protection. Like the KitchenAid toaster, we love the overall vintage vibes of this stylish option.

SMEG Toaster

Our Product Testing Team was impressed by this pricey, retro-inspired pick.

How We Testedthe SMEG Toaster

Over the course of several days, our Product Testing Team dedicated their time and Testing Lab to find thebest toasters for every budget and need. This endeavor introduced us to various options, from the aptly named Beautiful toaster to splurge-worthy finds like the Breville toaster. The SMEG toaster was voted the “most stylish” option, earning its place in the top six. It flawlessly tackled tests in the following categories (and looked good doing it):

  • Size and unit of measurements
  • Packaging and shipping quality
  • The fit of test foods, including thick-cut brioche, sourdough, English muffins, pastries, bagels and frozen waffles
  • Ease of slice removal
  • Any special settings and the performance of those settings
  • How long the settings take
  • Appearance, material and overall quality
  • Ease of care and cleaning
  • Quality compared to price

Before testing for our SMEG toaster review, we wondered how a toaster could possibly be worth $200. However, this appliance pleasantly surprised us with its aesthetics and overall performance against 12 competitors.

The settings offer toasting options for every breakfast eater, from no browning with a very light crisp to an impressively even browning with plenty of crunch. Toaster pastries also fared well on the lowest “defrost” setting, which, based on the icon, seems like a built-in reheat setting. It was perfectly heated through with an ooey, gooey center.

One-Month Update

Smeg Toaster One Month Update

Senior Video Producer Paul Klawien volunteered his kitchen to long-term test the SMEG toaster. So far, he is impressed with the glossy look and even results.

“Our family uses it about three to four times per week, and it does consistent toasting every time,” says Paul. “I really like the solid construction. Every piece on it feels sturdy and solid. The chrome and weight of it remind me of 1950s appliances that are durable and last forever.”

Regarding criticisms, Paul notes that the popping-up sound is rather quiet for his lifestyle. “My wife and I are running around in the morning with a family of young kids, so Ill often put breakfast in to get toasted and then multitask. I rarely notice when it pops, so toast often gets left in and cold. A louder pop would remind me to grab it right away,” he says.

Additionally, he finds the combination of small numbers and a chrome surface make the knob a bit difficult to read. He also notes that he must crank the dial to the sixth toast setting for bagels. That said, Paul mentions that the simplicity of the controls, the one-side toasting feature and a well-designed crumb tray balance out the negatives.

Pros:

  • Gorgeous design backed by strong, quality materials
  • 11 different sizes, shades and finishes available
  • Easy to clean and de-crumb
  • Includes a stop button
  • Has defrost and bagel buttons
  • 1-year warranty

Cons:

  • No lift function on the lever
  • Easily shows fingerprints
  • Wont fit squatter slices
  • Expensive

You probably know KitchenAid as the brand that churns out one of the kitchen biz’s most widely loved stand mixers. Fans rave about the sleek aesthetics and rainbow of color options available for both KitchenAid’s beloved countertop and hand mixers. However, the real appeal of the brand is its high-quality materials that make up some of the most innovative stand mixer attachments available. This extends to its other countertop appliances, from KitchenAid coffee machines to the KitchenAid toaster.

In our recent hunt for the best toasters, the KitchenAid toaster impressed us with more than just its shining exterior (which, to be fair, is gorgeous). With a library of settings, even results and looks that befit a mid-century modern dream kitchen, it topped our list as the best all-purpose option. Here’s why we keep popping our bread into this gleaming, retro-style appliance.

What is the KitchenAid Toaster?

Are you nostalgic for the glossy, space-age designs of yesteryear? The KitchenAid Toaster is made for folks like you. It’s a retro-style toaster that calls to mind mid-century home appliances with a shiny chrome body and sleek, rounded corners. Available in brushed silver, red and black, the toaster embodies 50s aesthetics without feeling dated. There’s also a four-slice option that functions as two toasters in one for folks with larger families. For our tests, we chose the Empire Red two-slice version.

Like most KitchenAid appliances, it’s undeniable that this toaster looks chic on a counter. The sides are reflective red plastic, and the top band is a beautiful brushed stainless. The controls, logo and lower base are trimmed in black. Chrome vents on the side give it a retro automobile feel. A five-point shade dial, pull-down lever and buttons are all on one end, while the other boasts a generous 38-inch cord that ends in a three-prong plug.

There are thoughtful touches throughout, including a bagel symbol that indicates which way to insert halves for the best outcome. A rather loud bell sounds when each toast session is finished, so you never forget about your breakfast while distracted by the morning rush.

How We Testedthe KitchenAid Toaster

Kitchenaid Toaster How we Tested

Over the course of several days, our Product Testing Team dedicated their time and Testing Lab to find the best toasters for every budget and need. This endeavor introduced us to various options, from a high-quality Breville pick to practically-priced budget options like the Beautiful toaster. The KitchenAid toaster impressed with its sturdy components and sleek look, earning it the best all-purpose award. It flawlessly tackled tests in the following categories:

  • Size and unit of measurements
  • Packaging and shipping quality
  • The fit of test foods, including thick-cut brioche, sourdough, English muffins, pastries, bagels and frozen waffles
  • Any special settings and the performance of those settings
  • Appearance, material and overall quality
  • Ease of care and cleaning
  • Quality compared to price

Testing Team Analysis

Kitchenaid Toaster Testing Team Analysis

The toaster truly is the perfect multipurpose pick, whether you prefer toaster pastries, English muffins or a slice of crispy, crunchy peanut butter toast. Five darkness settings and two “other” buttons (bagel and cancel) offer up a range of options for brunches, breakfasts and midday snacks. A simple control dial with an audible “click” ensures folks enjoy toast in the shade they expect.

While there are five darkness settings, we found the highest setting churned out smoking pieces that looked pretty inedible, and the medium setting was a bit more brown than wed like. That said, most folks will find that the sweet spot is the lowest setting, which churns out an even golden brown that extends the whole length of each bread slice.

Out of all the toasters we tested, the KitchenAid toaster’s bagel setting offered the most even browning. It is comparable, color-wise, to white bread we toasted on medium. It’s worth noting that the toaster does take a while to get there, opting for a “slow and steady” approach rather than a faster toast at higher temperatures. That said, we definitely prefer the accuracy of this toaster to the splotchy results from speedy competitors.

While it doesn’t offer a frozen setting or pastry buttons, both waffles and toaster pastries fared well on the first setting. The lever is a little bouncy, but other than that, it seems like it should last a long time. We’d love to see improvement in the lift function of the lever, which we needed to remove an English muffin. The edge of the muffin was barely above the opening of the slot, making it a bit awkward to retrieve. Other than that, we found few negatives to report.

Pros:

  • Sleek look that comes in six shades and finishes
  • Incredibly stable and lever feels high-quality
  • Shade dial has an audible click, so you know its properly set
  • A bell sounds when each toast session is finished
  • Bagel symbol indicates which way to insert halves
  • 1-year warranty

Cons:

  • Toasts a bit slowly
  • 3-prong plug may not work with all outlets
  • Fingerprint magnet

One Month Update

Kitchenaid Toaster 1 Month update

After testing the toaster against 13 other options in our Testing Lab, Editorial Business Assistant Kari Kober volunteered to continue using it as her primary toaster in her own home. Regarding long-term performance, Kari is impressed with the sleek, retro look and the even kiss of brown on toast, bagels and English muffins.

“The toaster itself is very nice looking with the red. I feel that it looks good enough to leave out on the counter. I go just past the first setting, and it toasts my toast, bagels and English muffins perfectly,” says Kari. “One of my favorite features is the beep it makes just before it pops up because if I have started something else, its a nice reminder rather than getting too sidetracked.”

In terms of overall quality, KitchenAid gets a thumbs up from Kari. “You can tell the quality is there in the toaster, and it’s well made and built to last. I feel it’s worth the price for a better-quality toaster. I dont feel that it’s too expensive, either,” she says.

FAQ

How to clean a KitchenAid toaster?

First, unplug the toaster and let it cool. Second, grasp the center of the crumb tray and slide it out. Finally, simply shake the crumbs into a waste container. We recommend emptying the crumb tray after each use. The Crumb tray is hand-wash only.

Similarly, wipe the toaster with a soft, damp cotton cloth. Do not use paper towels, abrasive cleaners or liquid cleaning products. Do not immerse the toaster in water. Return the crumb tray to the toaster. Press it in firmly until it clicks into position. Never use a toaster without a crumb tray in the proper position!

How do I reset my KitchenAid toaster?

Press the “cancel” button to reset a KitchenAid toaster.

Why is my KitchenAid toaster not toasting evenly?

A full crumb tray is the number one reason your toaster might not be toasting evenly. Emptying the crumb tray after each use ensures you get a nice, all-over golden brown rather than a spotty piece of bread.

Where to Buy the KitchenAid Toaster

Apart from its impressive performance, the KitchenAid toaster comes very reasonably priced at under $60. In addition to its mid-tier price point, we love that it’s readily available at most stores, including Amazon, Walmart and Wayfair.

Vellabox Candle Subscription BoxKATIE BANDURSKI/TASTE OF HOME

Pros:

  • Three different subscriptions
  • Surprise gift each month
  • Very inexpensive, considering the quality
  • Giftable packaging
  • Includes a variety of candle brands

Cons:

  • One scent per box

A candle subscription that’s affordable, flexible and giftable may seem like a white whale, but we found an option that truly does have it all. Our pick for the best overall candle subscription is Vellabox. Vellabox offers very flexible subscription options, parsed out by candle size. Choices include a four-ounce option, an eight-ounce option and a behemoth 16-ounce option.

Our favorite aspect of Vellabox is that each included candle comes from a different candlemaker each month, meaning that there’s no limit to the number of scents and brands you get to try. Plus, regardless of size, each box comes with a curated gift to accompany the candle.

Vellabox Candle Subscription Box

Senior Shopping Editor Katie Bandurski has been a Vellabox customer ever since trying them for her Vellabox review. In that time, she has received a number of candle companions, from gourmet lip balms to an eco-friendly mini scrub brush. “I’ve received many Vellabox boxes over the years, and they’re all high quality. I’ve found so many amazing scents (hello, pear and brandy), and I love to give them as gifts,” she says.

Subscriptions cost between $12 and $30, depending on your chosen candle size. For the price, we find Vellabox to be an incredible value for gifting, enjoying and exploring new scents. They’re also very well packaged to prevent breakage, and each comes in a pretty fabric pouch that elicits “oohs” and “ahhs” from potential giftees.

Dyson V8 Review: Dyson’s Affordable Cordless Vacuum Swept Our Testers off Their Feet https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/dyson-v8/ Thu, 13 Jun 2024 20:27:20 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2000191 Are Dyson vacuums worth the investment? One Product Testing Team put Dyson's most budget-friendly cordless vacuum—the Dyson v8—to the test.

The post Dyson V8 Review: Dyson’s Affordable Cordless Vacuum Swept Our Testers off Their Feet appeared first on Taste of Home.

For the past 30 years, Dyson has held its spot as one of the most reputable vacuum brands. Comparable to Shark, Dyson vacuums are sought for their powerful suction, innovative cleaning technology and impressive dust-busting attachments.

The Dyson V8 is no exception. It wowed our Product Testing Team with its performance and its affordable price tag. We personally lab-tested it alongside other Dyson cordless models to see how it stacked up to pricier models when tasked with cleaning up cereal, glitter and hair. The verdict? It suckedbut in all the ways we hoped.

What is the Dyson V8 vacuum?

Toha24 Dyson V8 Katie Bandurski Ssedit 05

The V8 is from Dyson’s latest line of nine powerful cordless vacuums. But what sets it apart from the rest of the models is its price point. While “Dyson” and “budget” rarely go hand in hand, the V8 is one of the most affordable options of the bunch.

At just 5.5 pounds, it’s also one of the lighter and quieter models, as our testers pleasantly noted. And while you’ll trade in a smaller bin size, you’ll still enjoy many of the impressive features included in Dyson’s other popular, higher-end models.

It combines durability and functionality with powerful suction and boasts de-tangling technology, a reusable HEPA filter, acoustic control, no-touch bin emptying, as well as the following slew of handy attachments:

  • Motorbar cleaner head: This head utilizes Dyson’s latest hair detangling technology andfeatures hair removal vanes to automatically clear hair as it cleans.
  • Hair screw tool:A conical brush that quickly removes hair from stairs, car seats and pet beds.
  • Crevice tool: Reach every nook and corner of your house with this narrow, precision-cleaning attachment.
  • Combination tool: A two-in-one, wide nozzle and brush dusts and cleans around your home or car.

Easily switch between two power modesLow and Maxto conserve battery and enjoy up to 40 minutes of runtime. For added convenience and versatility, convert the machine to a handheld vacuum. From there, you can easily clean furniture, cars and other hard-to-reach or high-up places (yes, even the ceiling!) thanks to its lightweight, ergonomic design.

We Tried It

Dyson V8

This affordable Dyson cordless vacuum exudes power and versatility in a lightweight footprint.

How We Tested It

Toha24 Dyson V8 Katie Bandurski Ssedit 04

Our Product Testing Team put the Dyson V8 through 15 tests, sucking up handfuls of various types of debris in our lab. We observed the V8’s performance vacuuming up cornflakes and glitter after three passes on tile, high-pile and low-pile carpet, as well as its efficiency at pulling hair out of carpet. We also collected data points on battery runtime, maneuverability and clearance around and under furniture.

While performance was a top priority, we also took the following important factors into consideration:

  • Packaging and setup
  • Specs and features
  • Accessories
  • Cleaning and emptying
  • Value

During testing, the machine really exceeded our expectations. Utilizing the Max mode, the V8 sucked up every bit of glitter and cornflakes on medium-pile carpet, and effectively collected and cleared hair from high-pile carpet. It struggled at first when we tested hair on medium-pile carpet, but it’s possible we threw too much hair its way.

We were also impressed with the V8’s ability to effortlessly suck up crumbs from the edge and corner of the room. On vinyl, we utilized the “Low” setting; anything stronger and the vacuum would have easily sucked up the mat from the floor. While it effortlessly cleared the glitter entirely, the cornflakes took a little more manual effort, and we had to lift and plop the vacuum directly onto the mess for it to suck it up.

We also tested the vacuum in the handheld mode; with the crevice tool attached, the cleaner extended to 48 inches for easy cleaning behind narrow furniture and high up on ceiling corners and shelves. Next, we tested the crevice tool to vacuum furniture, cleaning between tight cushions. While it got the job done, we highly recommend using the Low setting; in Max mode, it quickly surged in between the cushions (likely a safety mechanism to prevent the machine from overheating), and we noted a light burning smell.

Throughout our testing, the vacuum delivered roughly 30 minutes of fade-free power! While this was less than the 40 minutes Dyson promised, it was likely because we were utilizing the Max setting for the majority of our cleaning. Plus, with the machine’s effectiveness and efficiency, this would be ample time to clean most apartments and homes.

Toha24 Dyson V8 Katie Bandurski Ssedit 03

Lastly, we followed the manufacturers cleaning and emptying instructions. The team was impressed with the V8’s super easy-to-clean chamber, noting that all the debris fell out at once.

Overall, the V8’s stellar performance, lightweight floor-to-ceiling maneuverability and arsenal of attachments make it a valuable addition for those searching for the power and durability of a Dyson vacuum at a fraction of the price.

Long-Term Testing

Toha24 Dyson V8 Katie Bandurski Ssedit 02

We sent the V8 home with Executive Culinary Director Sarah Farmer to see how the vacuum cleaner holds up over time. While Sarah has only been using the vacuum for a few weeks, she’s already smitten.

“Ask my husbandI vacuum way too much. Im over-the-top with how often Im grabbing the Dyson to clean the kitchen, the hardwood floors, the rugs, the bedroom carpets and the stairsI could go on,” Sarah says. “For a clean freak like me, who feels most comfortable when my house is tidy, the Dyson is the way to go. It brings joy to my life!”

Sarah loves the long battery life, powerful suction and bounty of attachments. “On a single charge, it runs long enough for me to clean my entire first floor, covering multiple rooms effortlessly. (And I often operate it one-handed while Im on my phone.) The suction is powerful and reliable; no crumb or speck is left behind. The smart attachments make it easy to clean under appliances, on upholstered furniture, around chairs and on stairs. Cleaning the canister is so simple and satisfying, too.”

Pros

    • Easy-button operation
    • Lightweight (just 5.5 pounds!)
    • Multiple attachments, including hair screw and crevice tool
    • Dust chamber is easy to clean
    • Washable HEPA filter
    • Most quiet of all Dyson models tested

>Cons

      • Only two settings: Low and Max
      • Smaller collection bin

The Smart and Sleek Breville Toaster That Stole Our Editor’s Heart https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/breville-toaster-review/ Thu, 13 Jun 2024 15:55:05 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1999561 According to our tests, this Breville 2-slice toaster is worthy of the splurge, with a clever "A Bit More" function and large capacity slots.

The post The Smart and Sleek Breville Toaster That Stole Our Editor’s Heart appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>
You’re in good company if you understand the frustration of playing roulette against your budget toaster. Nothing is more disappointing than trying to toast a slice fresh from the bread machine, only to remove a charred husk from your toaster’s narrow slots. And that’s assuming those thick, rustic slices even fit in the first place.

Because of this, I used to consider toasters a necessary evil. No matter how I approach things, I always over-toast my gluten-free bread slices. Frankly, I’m tired of my breakfasts being last-minute bowls of cereal rather than the protein-packed peanut butter toast I dream of.

I would have laughed if you had told me last year that I’d be pining after a pretty, feature-packed smart toaster. That was before I heard about the Breville toasterand finally understood that owning one of the best toasters completely redefines breakfast.

What is the Breville Toaster?

The Breville toaster isn’t your grandma’s 1950s Toastmaster De Luxe. It’s sleek and futuristic and features simple, easy-to-understand settings and buttons. It doesn’t justlook nice, either. This impressive pick outperformed roughly seven other toasters in rigorous testing, earning it a spot alongside six other winners.

Noteworthy features include a “lift and look” lever for checking in on a piece’s progress and the “a bit more” button that adds just a touch of extra toastiness to slices. The toaster is compact and solid, offering a slip-free bottom that holds itself against aggressive lever-pullers (guilty!). Special settings include “bagel” and “frozen” buttons and a slider bar to indicate toast level. Additionally, the slider features an LED light that acts as a countdown. This handy visual reference makes it easy to see how much time is left at a glance.

Sure, it’s priced a bit higher than a traditional two-slice toaster. But the Breville toaster is well worth the splurge if you’re sick of badly burned toast or cold-in-the-middle pastries. Plus, the brand has a proven track record of putting out top-rated appliances. Our favorites include some of the best drip coffeemakers, indoor pizza ovens, and the famous Bambino Plus espresso machine, which impressed our deputy editor.

How We Tested the Breville Toaster

Breville Toaster

Over the course of several days, our Product Testing Team dedicated their time and Testing Lab to find the best toasters for every budget and need. This endeavor introduced us to various options, from pretty Beautiful-branded picks to practically-priced budget options. The Breville was our favorite “smart” option, earning its place in the top six. It flawlessly tackled tests in the following categories:

  • Size and unit of measurements
  • Packaging and shipping quality
  • The fit of test foods, including thick-cut brioche, sourdough, English muffins, pastries, bagels and frozen waffles
  • Ease of slice removal
  • Any special settings and the performance of those settings
  • How long the settings take
  • Appearance, material and overall quality
  • Ease of care and cleaning
  • Quality compared to price

From the outside in, this toaster impressed with its high quality components and thoughtful touches. Remarkably, the luxe brushed aluminum Breville hides fingerprints very well, making it great for families. In addition, a bagel symbol indicates which way to insert halves, leading to perfectly crispy, indulgent lox bagels. Probably our favorite feature is that the interior levers are automated, so the bread descends and ascends on its own after you press “go.”

Regardless of the setting, the toaster offers quite an even amount of browning on both sides. We found that the first setting is ideal for most folks. It leaves bread pleasantly crunchy, pastries golden brown on the edges, and waffles crispy on one side while soft enough to soak in syrup on the other. If you trust any toaster with the spoils from your favorite bread delivery service, make it this one.

One Month Update

Breville Toaster

Team member Jessi Rhine has been testing the Breville toaster for about four weeks in her own home. Despite heavy use during breakfast, she comments that the toaster still looks brand new. She uses it alongside a Breville toaster oven. The two appliances form a classy duo that tackles everything from warming pastries to impeccably toasted slices ready for a smear of butter and jelly.

Breville Toaster

“We used only to use a toaster oven in the past. This new toaster seems faster and makes the toast brown on both sides, which is great,” she says. “I think this is a great toaster, and I would recommend it.”

Breville Toaster

So far, Jessi has only used the toaster on the first toast setting, which results in perfectly toasted bread. She notes that the ‘a bit more’ setting is a handy option to boost the darkness slightly without worrying about charring her breakfast. That said, she also finds the first setting dark enough, noting that she can’t imagine trying to enjoy a piece toasted on the fifth setting. In our tests, this produces a pretty blackened piece, which some folks may prefer.

Pros

  • Has Lift and Look and A Bit More buttons
  • Three-prong plug with a handy pull ring
  • Very stable
  • LED countdown
  • Fits squatter slices at an angle

Cons

  • No choice of color or finish
  • Pricey

FAQ

How do I clean the Breville toaster?

According to the Testing Team, cleanup is simple. Remove the crumb tray, empty it, and replace it before using the toaster again. To remove additional crumbs, turn the toaster upside down over the trash bin and shake the crumbs free. Wipe the outside of the toaster with a slightly dampened soft cloth, then polish with a soft, dry cloth to dry completely.

Where to Buy the Breville Toaster

The Breville toaster is available for purchase at major retailers, including the Breville site, Amazon and Walmart. While it’s pricier than other options, it’s as close to an heirloom toaster as possible, making it worth the splurge. With proper care and use, we expect this one to last through years of daily use.

Best Overall Kitchen Knife Set

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Four Star Knife Set

Pros:

  • Sleek, understated look
  • Well-balanced German steel construction
  • Includes all the essentials
  • Heirloom quality materials
  • Very sharp out of the box

Cons:

  • Five-inch serrated knife may be too short for some
  • No sheaths or block included

Zwilling is practically synonymous with quality. Given that, we’re unsurprised that it scored the most points in our tests for the best kitchen knife set. The Four Star knife set is a basic but remarkable assortment of three essential knives. The set includes an eight-inch chef’s knife, a three-inch pairing knife and a five-inch serrated knife. We love that there’s no gimmicky extras or flashy frillsjust a simple, high-quality set of kitchen tools. The quality of the chef’s knife, in particular, is not lost on Deputy Editor and self-described knife snob Nicole Doster.

“You know how prepping ingredients usually feels like a chore? Now I look forward to it because I have such a nice knife that slides through celery, peppers, potatoes, broccoli florets, roast chicken and steak like butter,” she says. “With just a little pressure, the Zwilling knife chops harder ingredients too, like super fibrous sweet potato. I even retired my beloved Ergochef chef’s knife that I thought you’d have to rip from my cold dead hands in favor of the new Zwilling.”

She notes the overall ergonomics of this set are perfect for those who don’t like holding heavier utensils. “At first, I was shocked to feel that the knives were so lightweight. I’ve been used to handling Ergochef knives, which I consider high quality,” she says. “The Zwillings weren’t heavy in my hands but had enough weight distributed to feel well-balanced, like the knife wouldn’t sway one direction or the other.”

Zwilling

Each inclusion falls right into the “Goldilocks zone” of size and value, making them perfect for both budding home cooks and experienced chefs. The blades themselves come from high-carbon stainless steel using Henkel’s proprietary “FRIODUR” methods. This method centers on heating and cooling the blades in a specific manner to create a high-quality cutting tool that doesn’t chip or crumble throughout the years. While the serrated knife works well for most baked goods, our one complaint is that the five-inch blade may be too short for larger bread loaves.

Unfortunately, this particular Zwilling set doesn’t come with a dedicated knife block (or sheaths, for that matter). However, given the quality and value of the set, we don’t consider that a deal breaker. Those interested in the set should snag one of our favorite knife holders to keep your workspace tidy and your knives from knocking against each other.

This Beautiful Toaster Is Our Product Testing Team’s Favorite Budget Appliance https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/beautiful-toaster/ Wed, 12 Jun 2024 19:30:54 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2001956 The sleek and stylish Beautiful Toaster by Drew Barrymore is more than just its good looks. Here's how it beat out 13 other brands.

While you may know her as an actress, Drew Barrymore is also a businesswoman with her own lines of cleaning products and kitchen appliances. The Beautiful by Drew collection at Walmart, in particular, cultivates a cult following of folks who love pretty gear. And there’s more to this ultra-shoppable set than colorful selections and shiny details.

In fact, the Beautiful Toaster won the “best overall” honor during our toaster tests, coming out ahead of industry-leading brands like KitchenAid and Breville. It even earned a spot on our Product Testing Manager’s counter!

So what’s the deal with the Beautiful Toaster? If you expect just another piece of celebrity cookware, you’re mistaken. This sleek, colorful toaster offers optimum performance in a pretty package. Plus, it retails for less than $40. Here’s why we’re obsessed with this practical and lovely appliance.

What is the Beautiful Toaster?

The Beautiful Toaster from the Beautiful by Drew Barrymore kitchen line absolutely oozes style. Apart from offering a sleek matte body and silvery, shining accents, it also takes up just 11 inches of space. A lift function on the lever makes retrieving squatter slices of bread easy, and bagel and gluten-free settings round out its functionality.

Like the rest of the Beautiful line (including the Hero Pan), the toaster comes in seven pretty shades: black sesame, cornflower blue, lavender, oyster grey, rose, sage green and white icing. The toaster uses touchscreen technology rather than raised buttons, making it much easier to clean since there’s nowhere to trap crumbs.

How We Testedthe Beautiful Toaster

Beautiful By Drew Toaster

Over the course of several days, our Product Testing Team dedicated their time and Testing Lab to find the best toasters for every budget and need. This endeavor introduced us to various options in various styles and price points. The Beautiful by Drew Barrymore Toaster immediately won us over, earning it the best overall award. It flawlessly tackled tests in the following categories:

  • Size and unit of measurements
  • Packaging and shipping quality
  • The fit of foods, including thick-cut brioche, sourdough, English muffins, pastries, bagels and frozen waffles
  • Ease of slice removal
  • Performance of special settings
  • Timing of each setting
  • Appearance, material and overall quality
  • Ease of care and cleaning
  • Quality compared to price

The Beautiful by Drew Toaster is impressive with its sleek matte finish, on which we found fingerprints are nearly indetectable. A satin gold handle with a B monogram on the side and a futuristic touchscreen display round out this pretty pick. However, beauty isn’t the only thing going for this stylish option.

In terms of performance, it delivers as-expected darkness for each setting. The lowest option is one of the fastest of all the toasters we tested. It leaves a substantial crisp on both sides of the bread without browning. One setting up, and the bread gets pretty dark. A nice brownness all over the bread slices even reaches the edges. The upper quarter of each bread piece is ever-so-slightly darker than the rest. As for the darkest setting, an all-over even darkness covers the bread. While most folks will settle for the middle setting, it’s nice that the others offer even coverage.

We were most impressed with the waffle setting. During our tests, the toaster browned waffles all over and completely defrosted the waffles interiorsomething the other toasters we tested struggled with. The instructions note not to use it for toaster pastries with runny filling, but we found no issues toasting one up on low.

While it doesn’t offer the same smart features as our beloved Breville toaster, the LED touchscreen adds an additional layer of user-friendly elegance. It also comes in a wide range of shades that match the rest of the line, including the frozen margarita maker. Those seeking a toaster that flawlessly tackles the basics and looks good doing it, the Beautiful Toaster is exactly what you’re looking for.

Four-Month Update

Product Testing Manager Annamarie Higley has regularly used this toaster at home since the end of March. Its operating just as well as it did months ago. Apart from being the overall best toaster winner, this was also Annamarie’s personal favorite toaster from the batch test.

“This toaster isnt perfect, but I quickly learned during batch testing that no toaster is (even the $300 ones!),” says Annamarie. “All things considered, this toaster produces a remarkably even toast. I appreciate that this toaster has a matte finish. Some of my other toasters have been chrome or stainless steel, and the finger prints are inevitable but insanely irksome, nonetheless. Not an issue with this one!”

One place where Annamarie notes the toaster could do better? Bagels. “It seems as though the heat intensity decreases when you hit the bagel button. For example, a level-three toast on a bagel with the bagel setting wont be as dark as a level-three toast on a regular piece of bread on the standard toast setting,” she says. “I havent quite honed how to best make bagels with it. It produces near-perfect English muffins, bread and frozen waffles, though.”

Ive used a few other Beautiful products, like the ceramic-coated skillet and stand mixer, and Im always astounded by the quality for the price. This toaster is no different. Its understated but still so stylish, toasts a mean slice of toast and costs only $40,” notes Annamarie. “I love for items in my home to have a little personality (but I dont want to sacrifice performance, obviously!). This toaster is perfect for me.

We Tested 17 Of The Best Ceramic Cookware Brands These Are The Ones Worth Buying Greenpan Ssedit

According to our extensive testing, GreenPan produces the overall best ceramic cookware. The GreenPan Valencia pan has a silky ceramic coating that keeps everything from crepes to eggs sliding smoothly across the surface. In addition toearning its place as the best ceramic frying pan thanks to its performance, GreenPan’s ceramic offerings work on every cooking surface, including induction.

Because it comes from sturdy, heavy-duty aluminum, we expect it to last through years of use with proper care. That shouldn’t be a problem for most, especially since it’s one of the only options we tested that’s metal utensil safe. In addition, a scratch- and chip-resistant surface makes the slightly higher price tag a little easier to swallow. Like the featured pan in our GreenPan review, this ceramic cookware also comes in various fun shades. Colors include green, pink, blue, mint, yellow, purple, burgundy and coral, among many other options.

“If you’re looking for a quality pan that sears like a dream, the GreenPan Valencia is a solid option with an effective non-stick finish and induction-compatible magnetic base,” says Product Testing Team Member Dylan Fischer. In our tests of the pan, we noted that it offers some of the most even results in our searing test. The chicken turned the perfect shade of bronze, with a slightly browner center. Plus, the pan itself is lightweight and easy to maneuver for fancy egg flips.

Even after our tests, the bottom of the pan remained pristinethere was no charring or scratching! Plus, GreenPan backs its cookware with a two-year warranty for the ceramic coating and a lifetime warranty that covers defects. While the pan has no lid, easy cleanup and perfect nonstick performance make it worth the splurge.

Pros:

  • Gas-powered for convenient use
  • Simple to set up
  • Reaches 950 degrees
  • Spacious 16-inch cooking area
  • Carbon steel exterior with folding legs

Cons:

  • Tools such as pizza peel and turner sold separately
  • L-shaped flame requires careful watch and turning
Toha24 Koda 16 Molly Allen Ssedit 08

The Ooni Koda 16 is awarded the top spot for best Ooni pizza oven because of its versatility, durability and ease of use.

The sleek oven is constructed from carbon-coated steel, which plays a role in heat retention while the oven is on. That black powder coating on the exterior helps to protect the pizza oven from a variety of elements, making it very durable for years of outdoor use. It weighs just under 40 pounds, so it’s not the most portable of the Ooni ovens, but that extra weight is all worth it for the extra cooking space that comes with it. With 16 inches of cordierite pizza stone space and a wide opening, it’s easier to turn pizzas. It also means you can put larger cast iron pans in the oven, allowing you to cook everything from grilled veggies to meatballs or even nachos.

Once the oven is hooked up to a propane tank and the ignition switch on the side is turned on, it takes 20 minutes to preheat. That time brings the pizza stone and oven to about 800 degrees, though the oven can reach 950 degrees. I find that cooking pizzas between 750 to 850 degrees is my preferred temperature, which means I can cook pizzas in under two minutes. The oven has an L-shaped flame on the left side. It’s important to keep an eye and turn pizzas frequently in this oven to achieve even browning of the crust.

Thanks to its roomy design, I’ve found it simple to clean this oven. You can keep the oven on high to help cook off any burnt-on food remnants or use a pizza oven brush to help scrape things off. The stone is removable, so you can allow it to cool, take it out and easily clean out the back of the oven. While the Ooni Koda 16 is my top overall pick, the brand also makes the same oven in a smaller size. Our team also tested the Ooni Koda 12. It has all of the same features but comes with a smaller 12-inch cooking area at a lower price point.

Suncreat Double Hammock with Stand

Cons:

  • Tricky to clean
Suncreat Double Hammock With Stand Katie Bandurski Ssedit B

There’s a lot to love about the Suncreat double hammock. It checks nearly all the boxes for what the best hammock should look like: It’s easy to assemble; there are over 18 prints, colors and patterns for any backyard style; and, perhaps most importantly, it’s incredibly relaxing.

As a self-proclaimed hammock connoisseur, this is the most comfortable hammock I’ve ever used. Its extra-large double capacity means I’m cradled in every directionwith room to spare! That added room makes shifting around on the hammock easy without fear of tipping over. Think of it like lying on a twin bed vs. a queen. The latter has way more space to spread out.

When this hammock arrived on my doorstep, it came in a large box. I could lift it fairly easily, but it would be seamless with two people. To assemble, you simply slide the stand pieces together until they snap into place, then hang the hammock net from the attached carabiner hooks. I find my hammock only fits on the first few rungs of the chain, which means as the net stretches with time, I’ll be able to pull it tighter and prolong its use.

Like most hammocks, we suggest taking your time getting into it; otherwise, you might slip or flip out. Ensure the hammock is on a completely flat surface, too. Once you’re in, it provides ample support and feels secure. I’ve laid in this hammock multiple times by myself and with my husband. While we don’t meet the advertised 475-pound capacity, I’m confident this hammock can hold diverse body types. (My husband is 6-foot and has no issues!)

The only downside? There’s no great way to clean the hammock bed. Since the rope is interwoven with the netting, you can’t separate the two to run the cover through the wash. I’ve had no issues so far, but I also bring the net into my garage after each use.

Best Overall Dining Table

Serif Extendable Dining Table

Pros:

  • Appealing mid-century design
  • Easy-to-follow directions
  • Sturdy, heavy materials
  • Extendable to 79 inches
  • Hidden tray for storing leaves when not in use
  • Scratch- and stain-resistant tabletop

Cons:

  • Pricey
  • Not 100% wood

Sturdy materials and a pleasant, simplistic design make the Serif extendable dining table our top pick for the best dining room tables overall. Apart from the clean, neutral lines, we appreciate the simple assembly and low-maintenance materials that make it a shoo-in for families. A choice of oak or walnut offers an extra layer of customization.

The table provides a smooth, flat surface thats stain- and scratch-resistant, so its great for a variety of family activities like cooking and crafting, says EditorMary Henn, who owns a Serif table. Despite the tabletop not boasting 100% wood, it’s still simple to maintain and doesn’t scratch easily. While you should only use wood-safe products for a deep clean, a wet rag should do the trick for cleaning up daily messes, notes Mary.

One of our favorite aspects of this unassuming wood table is that it truly works in almost any space. It looks just as at home with a spread of Pioneer Woman dishes as it does adorned with mid-century margarita glasses. Additionally, thanks to the extendable tabletop, it seats anywhere from four to eight people. Just install the hidden leaf for holidays and gatherings. We love that the leaves also nestle into a hidden tray beneath the tabletop when not in use, freeing up additional storage space.

Overall, we find it worth the slightly higher price point, especially if you’re looking for an option built to last through years of dinner parties and daily use.

Dimensions: 59 L x 34.5 W x 29.75 H | Seats: 4 to 8 | Material(s):Solid ash, ash veneer, engineered wood | Features:Extendable to 78.75, scratch- and stain-resistant top

Leave the differences between Napoleon Grills vs. Weber.

The post Napoleon Grills vs. Weber: Who Makes the Better Grill? appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>
Shopping for a new grill for the backyard can be tricky with so many choices on the market. Two top options? Napoleon Grills vs. Weber Grills. But is one better than the other?

Weber and Napoleon Grills offer a wide range of gas and charcoal grills across various styles, designs and price points. Each is constructed from durable stainless steel, making for a long-lasting investment. If the competition feels a little too hot, we’re here to help explain the differences between Napoleon Grills and Weber Grills. Our insights are based on two weeks of firsthand testing from the Taste of Home Test Kitchen.

What’s the difference between Weber and Napoleon Grills?

Weber and Napoleon are at the top of my mind when shopping for the best grills, either charcoal or gas. Weber debuted the initial charcoal kettle grill in the 1950s and has continued to be known for its iconic shape and performance. Napoleon offers a similar kettle-style design for charcoal, but you can get started with grilling on their charcoal grill at a lower price point. The gas grills offered by both brands are constructed from stainless steel for sturdiness and durability, with each model offering a different number of burners and specific features. When it comes to warranty, Napoleon Grills has a longer warranty with 10-year and 15-year coverage, or even a lifetime warranty, depending on the grill type. Weber offers 5-year, 10-year and 12-year options for some models, depending on which type of grill you’re purchasing.

All About Napoleon Grills

Napoleon Grills makes a wide range of styles and designs across multiple fuel types. The brand has gas grills ranging in price and size, along with multiple charcoal grills and electric and portable grills. Both the charcoal grill and gas grill models are constructed from stainless steel, which helps with durability, sturdiness and heat retention.

In testing a Charcoal Pro grill from Napoleon, our test kitchen found it to be a top performer. The grill performed well and maintained temperature, but some additional coals needed to be added to keep up to the proper temperature on longer cooking sessions. Many of the Napoleon charcoal grills are designed with four legs and two wheels, so they can be moved if needed. The gas grills receive similar high marks thanks to their sturdy construction, handy shelves and storage elements and even heat performance. It is important to note, however, that the grill grates in many Napoleon Grill models were found to be incredibly heavy during testing, making them difficult to move.

Napoleon Grills range in price, with the baseline charcoal kettle grills starting at $199 and working up to $1700 for the larger gas grills with additional burners and accessories. Napoleon is well-known for its long-lasting build and a lifetime warranty on some grill models.

All About Weber Grills

Weber Grills makes charcoal grills, gas grills and a wood pellet grill. The original Weber Kettle Grill, one of our top picks for the best charcoal grills, has been in production since the 1950s, continuing with its iconic dome shape. The Weber charcoal grills are constructed from steel with a porcelain coating to prevent rusting. Weber gas grills are built from steel and come in various models and sizes. Our test kitchen loves the Weber Genesis for its steakhouse-quality cook on steaks and chicken. The test kitchen has also tested multiple 22-inch Weber kettle grills, each offering excellent heat retention and ease of use paired with tasty char-grilled flavor on foods pulled off the grill.

Weber Grills range in pricing, with the original kettle grill being the most-approachable at just over $200 and other models going up in price with added features such as side arm tables, additional legs and wheels, color customizations and more. Weber gas grills range widely from the test kitchen-approved three-burner Spirit II E-210 gas grill at $449 all the way up to much larger gas grills with all the bells and whistles at $5000. Weber grills continuously receive top reviews thanks to their long-lasting construction, high heat performance and extensive warranties.

FAQ

Napoleon

Is Napoleon better than Weber?

Some Napoleon grills may be better for some shopper’s needs than Weber’s, but it all depends on the specific desired size, style and features. Many Napoleon gas grill designs may offer more power. Napoleon also offers a more generous warranty program.

Are Napoleon grills high quality?

Napoleon grills are high-quality thanks to their stainless steel construction, stability, durability and clever design components. They also come with a generous 10-year, 15-year or lifetime warranty depending on the grill type.

What is the life expectancy of a Weber gas grill?

Weber grills have been known to last for years, many up to 10 to 15 years and beyond. The life expectancy of the grill is based on how well it is stored, kept and cleaned. A grill brush will be your best friend in keeping your Weber grill in tip-top shape.

The Bottom Line

It’s difficult to name a tried and true winner of Napoleon Grills vs. Weber because each has their strengths. Weber has long been known for its iconic design of the original charcoal kettle grill, and you can upgrade your kettle grill by choosing from various colors and accessories. Napoleon is known for excellent heat output and longevity, which can be most helpful for those looking for gas grills. Weber’s Genesis gas grill is one of our Test Kitchen’s top picks. Ultimately, it all boils down to the design, style and features you like best.

Best Charcoal

Weber Performer Charcoal Grill

Pros:

  • Easy to assemble and use
  • Four-wheeled sturdy design
  • Sturdy folding side table for prep and holding
  • Lid cradle for easy grill grate access
  • Excellent heat performance and retention

Cons:

  • A char basket for indirect cooking would be a helpful addition

While the Original Kettle Grill from Weber is a tried and true classic, the Performer Charcoal Grill is the ultimate upgrade, making charcoal grilling that much better. Assembly on this grill is quick and simple without too many parts to put together. It has the classic kettle shape with a twist, giving you very large, sturdy wheels on four legs, along with a folding side table for prepping or holding food, an attached side lid holder and three hooks for hanging cooking tools and grilling accessories within easy reach.

Weber performer

This charcoal grill has a built-in thermometer with simple temperature adjustments made possible by opening and closing the top and lower vents. While additional coals didn’t need to be added during the Test Kitchen’s cooking tests making a whole chicken, cooking a steak and cooking baby back ribs, it can be easily done thanks to the hinged grates and removable center grate. The grill produced a nice sear on both sides of a steak, beautiful grill marks on a golden brown chicken and excellent tender baby back ribs.

After cooking, the grill grates can easily be cleaned with a grill brush and won’t be scratched by the bristles.

When it comes to ordering a food gifteither for yourself or a loved onethe choices are pretty overwhelming. From cheese and snacks to the classic fruit delivery or chocolate gift basket, there are hundreds of products to sift through. But when it comes to food care packages, there’s one retailer with a storied history: Harry & David.

At Taste of Home, we’ve spent countless hours testing gift baskets, and time after time, we’ve seen strong results from iconic food gift brand, Harry & David. Heres what you need to know before placing an order.

What Is Harry & David?

Harry & David is a mail-order gifting platform thats been sending fresh fruit and food gifts since 1934. While primarily based online, the brand has a flagship store in Medford, Oregon.

You can find about anything at Harry & Davidfrom sweet treats to dinner spreads. They also offer non-consumables, like flowers, plants and homewares. Some of the brands most iconic offerings are their Royal pears and Moose Munch popcorn.

In addition to the official Harry & David website, you can find select gifts on Amazon.

How We Tested Harry & David

Harry & David Gourmet Gifts

To date, our team has tested over a dozen Harry & David products in nearly every category, including evergreen and seasonal items. We evaluated each gift on the delivery experience, packaging, quality and taste. Theres no denying these gifts are pricey, so we keep value top of mind, too.

Gift Baskets and Boxes

Harry & David Gourmet Gifts

This is the crme de la crme of Harry & David, and we mean it when we say theres a food gift basket for every occasion. Heading to a retirement party? Send em off in style with an assortment of meats, cheese and munchies. Celebrating an engagement or housewarming? Dont forget the wine! The brand has plenty of pick-me-ups for more somber occasions that require a sympathy gift basket, too.

One of our favorite picks is the massive Chest of Chocolates with Wine. This behemoth of sweets showcases a little bit of everything, including Moose Munch popcorn, chocolate decadence cake, candies galore and a bottle of red blend wine.

The chest of chocolates and wine were packaged very carefullysome of the best packaging I’ve seen when it comes to keeping items safe and intact, shares Shopping Editor Mary Henn. Contents seem a bit smaller in person than what’s pictured online, but there’s a good variety of chocolates.

Speaking of Moose Munch, this stuff will keep you coming back for more. Product Testing Manager Annamarie Higley tried a holiday drum of Moose Munch and appreciated the deviation from the typical salty snack. The popcorn was fresh and not at all chewy or stale, despite shipping and intense toppings, Annamarie says. It was indulgent and rich, but still, I couldnt help myself from going back for handful after handful. Its easily the best popcorn Ive ever eaten.

Luckily, the flavors we testedmilk chocolate, dark chocolate and classic caramelare available year-round in a cheery Moose Munch Trio gift box.

The pears that started it all! Harry & David are synonymous with their royal pears. Youll see different varieties available depending on what time of year youre shopping, but the most famous is the Royal Riviera variety available during the holiday season.

Culinary Producer Sarah Tramontewas impressed by her box of Royal Riviera Christmas pears. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of these pears, they were delicious, and the packaging kept them in great condition, Sarah says. Pears can be hard to find in stores with little blemishes, but these were perfect.

Beyond pears, youll find plenty of other fruit gift baskets and monthly fruit subscriptions. Shopping Editor Emily Way reviewed the Fruit and Cheese Club and was blown away by the variety.

My March shipment came with six huge HoneyBells accompanied by an eight-ounce slab of Wood River Creamery cheddar gruyere, Emily says. As someone notoriously picky about her oranges, I was super impressed with the quality of the produce. The HoneyBell citruses were big, juicy and offered just the right touch of sweetness. The cheddar gruyre was creamy and offered a pleasant sharpness that contrasted well with the HoneyBells mild flavor.

Flowers and Plants

Harry & Davids parent company is 1-800 Flowers, so I had high expectations when testing the Bulb of the Month Club.

I received Aprils tulip and hyacinth garden. It arrived, quite literally, as a pot of dirt. But after watering and a few days in a sunny spot, shoots started to emerge. With a little TLC, this arrangement came to life (rather than wilting and decaying like fresh flowers do). Plus, after the blooms are mature, I can plant them in my garden for enjoyment next year.

Beyond the blub club, you can find a number of succulents and plant gifts, as well as fresh bouquets fulfilled by 1-800 Flowers.

Bakery

It should come as no surprise that Harry & David offers tasty baked goods, too. After all, their sister company, Cheryl’s Cookies, is an editor favorite.

Emily sampled the Signature Bakery Assortment, which is overflowing with cakes, baklava, galettes, cookies and a cinnamon swirl. “Everything looks fresh, and upon opening the box it smelled absolutely lovely, like a local bakery,” Emily says of the delivery experience. “Excellent varietytheres a little something for everyone whether youre a fan of fruity cookies and cakes or prefer chocolate. My husband and I went through about half the treats after a week. The good thing is that everything freezes well, so thats an option if your giftee cant work their way through it quickly enough (though that shouldnt be a problemeverything is delicious!)”

Her favorite treat? The lemon poppyseed cake. “Absolutely beautiful! The cake was in pristine condition, and the icing on top looked great even after shipping. The poppy seeds were evenly distributed, too. The whole thing was lovely.”

During the holiday season, we also gave the brand’s Christmas cookie delivery high marks. Associate Product Tester Dylan Fischer gave the Christmas Cookie Collection a respectable rating, noting, “While it’s slightly on the pricier side, you are receiving a solid amount of (mostly) well-made cookies in a very slick, festive box. Makes for a great gift!”

Gourmet Food

If theres one category from Harry & David were not entirely sold on, its the Gourmet Foods section. While a solid option for ordering specialty holiday meals, our testing found their general meat delivery disappointing.

Reviewer Allison Robicelli, who is a former professional chef, found that the Classic Fine Meats Collection left a lot to be desired. Her package included teriyaki chicken breasts, bacon-wrapped pork chops, lamb porterhouses and top sirloin beef filets.

These were fine. That’s allfine, Allison says of the beef and pork. Not exceptionally dry nor juicy, neither bland nor flavorful. She found the chicken on par with grocery store qualitythat’s to say, not worth the elevated price point. The lamb, however, was a bright spot. I don’t eat lamb often, so it was nice to get these in a package. Was it the best lamb I’ve ever had? Not by a long shot. But it was still flavorful and cooked up nice.

While the meat was a miss, we also tested the Pick Four Relishes set and Pick Two Coffees bundle. Both gifts delivered.

The relishes arrived in a box containing what resembles a drink holder from a fast food place, and each was wrapped in bubble wrap for security. Really great packaging, zero breakage, says Emily. While a bit pricey, the relishes are yummy and the portions are generous. The Original Pepper & Onion Relish is delicious. Id honestly put this on everything: sandwiches, charcuterie, toast, crackers. Really nice, light, balanced flavor.

Mary had similar things to say about her coffee box, noting, Good flavored coffee. I like my coffee strong and flavorful and this coffee did the trick. Certainly not craft beans, but a step above grocery store brands. She tried the Moose Munch Milk Chocolate Caramel Ground Coffee and Vanilla Crme Brule Coffee Beans. These coffee flavors make me think of the holidays, and the price seems fairly cheap for gourmet coffee.

FAQ

Do Harry & David make good wine?

In our experience, yes! Mary tried the 2020 Royal Crest Red blend while testing the chocolate chest. “It’s a versatile crowd-pleaser,” she says. “It pairs well with a variety of foods, especially heavier foods and meats.” While not the most expensive bottle you can buy, it’s on par (if not a step above) what you can find in the grocery stores.

Are Harry & David gift baskets worth it?

If the packaging and delivery experience is important to you, yes. From a value perspective, you could likely order similar items on DoorDash from a gourmet grocery store and send them to your recipient for cheaper. But Harry & David goes a step beyond and ensures a seamless packaging experience that makes these gifts stand out. Plus, many of our favorite food items, like Moose Munch and the Royal Riveria pears, are exclusive to the brand.

Why You Should Trust Us

As Senior Shopping Editor, it is quite literally my job to find the best gifts on the market. I have over eight years of experience in the home and food industry, with four of those years heavily focused on giftable products. From coffee subscriptions to soup care packages and famous Levain cookies, Ive reviewed hundreds of gifts for Taste of Home.

For this piece, I was joined by a crew of other Shopping Editors, expert writers and Test Kitchen pros. In total, seven staffers helped with this Harry & David review.

The Bottom Line

Harry & David Shipping

If youre looking to send a food gift, Harry & David cant be beaten. Across the board, they provide exemplary packaging, tasty eats and a professional touch. The only downside? Like most online food delivery brands, some of the picks are a bit pricey. You are paying for the expert packaging and overall gifting experience.

Best Overall Non-Alcoholic Beer

Athletic Brewing Company

Pros:

  • Tastes nearly indistinguishable from normal beer
  • Very accessible
  • Over 17 different flavors, including lite and IPA options
  • Relatively inexpensive
  • One of the largest NA-dedicated breweries in the US

Cons:

  • Some of the more specialty flavors need to be ordered online

Accessibility doesn’t always mean poor quality, especially for non-alcoholic beer brand Athletic Brewing Company. Available in over 17 different flavorsincluding Mexican-style coppers, darks, sours and IPAs among many other optionsyou’ve probably run into Athletic on at least one occasion in the grocery aisle. In fact, this overall best-tasting non-alcoholic beer is the first non-alcoholic brew I tried. Even after years spent tipping back other options, I keep returning to the bright and cheery Athletic cans on my local supermarket’s shelves.

Founded in sunny California and with operations in Connecticut, the US-based brand is tight-lipped about its proprietary brewing process. They’re also one of the largest dedicated non-alcoholic breweries that exist, period. My favorite flavors are the Run Wild and Free Wave Hazy IPAs, though they also offer fruity options and dark beers as well. Run Wild is a light and bubbly brew that tastes nearly indistinguishable from the real deal thanks to a pervasive underlying hoppiness and pleasantly bitter finish.

Athletic Brewing Company Cans

My partner best summarizes my thoughts on the brand: “Quality, consistency and ambition. They endeavor to make a genuinely good beer that won’t give you a hangover.” Whether you’re giving up alcohol for personal or health reasons, Athletic’s non-alcoholic drinks never cease to impress. That said, expect to place an online order for limited flavors like Hoppy Helles Trailblazer and Tropical Reset sour, which are only available on their website.

Ooni Koda 12 Pizza Oven Ooni On Camryn Rabideau For Taste Of Home Mledit A

Although you can make homemade pizza, it usually doesn’t come out quite as good as a fresh pie from your local pizzeria. Residential ovens just can’t reach the high temps needed for that perfectly crispy crust. However, outdoor pizza ovens are changing the game by making it possible to whip up professional-quality pizza in the comfort of your yard. It’s no wonder they’re all the rage lately!

As a self-proclaimed pizza enthusiast and lover of cool cooking appliances, I knew I needed to try the Ooni Koda 12 pizza oven. This gas-powered oven claims to cook perfect pizzas in as little as 60 seconds and can reach temperatures up to 950 degrees! After several weeks of lusting, I finally caved and bought the Ooni Koda 12 for my backyard. It’s been over a year since then, and I honestly don’t want to live without it.

What is the Ooni Koda 12?

Ooni pizza ovens have been around since 2012, but they recently surged in popularity as people searched for creative ways to pass the time at home. After all, what better way to spend time with family than by making homemade pizza?

Ooni ovens cook pizza at extremely high temperatures and are significantly sleeker and more compact than many other brands. They’re designed to be portable, allowing you to make pizza virtually anywhere, and they won’t take up a huge chunk of storage space when not in use.

The Ooni Koda 12 cooks 12-inch pies in just 90 seconds. It connects to a propane tank, just like your favorite gas grill, and fits in tight outdoor spaces.

Ooni Koda 12 Features

The Ooni Koda 12 pizza oven has an extremely sleek, compact design. The oven is around 23 inches long and 14 inches wide, and it stands on three metal legs with rubber tips. The legs fold up when the oven isn’t in use, making it fairly easy to store. I have a wooden cabinet on our enclosed deck where we keep the oven, which doesn’t take up much space.

The Ooni Koda 12 only weighs around 20 pounds, so it’s easy to move around as needed and has a gray, powder-coated finish. However, the finish does scratch fairly easily if you’re not careful. At one point, we had the oven on a low table and our dog jumped up on it, leaving a few good scratches on the surface.

How We Tested It

As the proud owner of an Ooni Koda 12, I’ve (slowly) become a pizza master over the past year. Here’s how I put the oven through the pacesand what I learned along the way.

Set-Up and Assembly

When I first received the oven, I was impressed that it was ready to use right out of the box. No assembly was neededall I had to do was put the pizza stone in the oven and hook it up to a 20-pound propane tank. Along with the pizza oven itself, I also purchased the brand’s perforated pizza peel and an infrared thermometer, which allows you to measure the temperature of the pizza stone while the oven is on.

Prepping the Pies

putting a pepperoni pizza into the Oonie pizza oven

The first time we used our Ooni Koda 12, my partner and I kept it simple by making ourselves a few pepperoni pizzas. I used the Ooni pizza dough recipe, and we topped our pies with pizza sauce, fresh mozzarella and pepperoni. Yum!

You need to stretch the dough very thin to make a proper Neapolitan pizza. You also have to generously flour the peel to get a good “launch,” the term for sliding the pizza off the peel into the oven. Pro tip: Top your homemade pizzas with freshly shredded cheese, courtesy of this genius cheese shredder.

The First Few Uses

using a temperature gun to check the oonie oven temperature

There’s a learning curve to using the Ooni Koda 12, especially if you’ve never used a pizza oven. But luckily, the process is easy to master.

After just 15 to 20 minutes of preheating, the pizza stone reached a temperature of 650 degrees. The cooking time is typically only two or three minutes, so it’s important to monitor your pizza closely while it’s cooking. Otherwise, you can quickly end up with burnt edges. Because we were total novices at pizza baking, our first few pies certainly weren’t as picturesque as the ones on the Ooni website. However, they were still tasty, and we could see the oven’s potential.

Becoming Pizza Pros

a pizza on a pizza peel inside the oonie oven

We continued experimenting with the Ooni, and slowly, our pizzas became more and more beautiful. We’ve learned a lot of lessons along the way. Here are some of our top tips:

  • Spend the money on the Ooni pizza-turning peel. The back of the oven is much hotter than the front, so you need to rotate your pizza while it’s cooking for even results. It’s much easier to turn the pizza inside the oven using the turning peel than to take it out and rotate it on a regular peel.
  • Preheat the oven for as long as possible to get the stone nice and hot, but before you launch your pizza, turn down the gas so the flames don’t burn your crust.
  • Keep your pies on the smaller side. The Ooni Koda 12 can hold pizzas up to 12 inches wide, but they’re much easier to turn if you give yourself a few inches of wiggle room.
  • If you make your own pizza dough, use 00 flour. It makes for a much smoother dough and delicate crust.
  • Don’t go crazy with the toppings. If you put too much on top of your dough, the ingredients might go flying when you launch the pizza into the oven.

We hosted a small backyard party with my family, and the pizzas came out phenomenal! Everything was perfectly cookedno burnt edges to be found. I’d definitely recommend practicing a few times before you try to wow your friends. But once you get the hang of it, you’ll never want to get takeout again.

Pros

  • Cooks restaurant-quality pizza extremely quickly
  • Two sizes available
  • Reaches temperatures up to 950F
  • Straightforward operation
  • Legs fold for compact storage

Cons

  • Learning curve for picture-perfect pies
  • Several pizza tools are required for easy operation

FAQs

What else can I cook in my Ooni pizza oven?

Although Ooni pizza ovens are most often used for cooking Neapolitan-style pizza, you can also cook other foods in the device. The brand sells cast-iron cookware that fits perfectly inside the oven to cook meat, fish and vegetables in the high-heat oven. You can also cook homemade bread right on the pizza stone.

Do you need a pizza stone for Ooni pizza oven?

The Ooni Koda 12 comes with a cordierite stone baking board in the oven’s bottom. You can cook directly on the board and do not need a separate pizza stone.

Can Ooni pizza oven be used indoors?

Ooni pizza ovens are for outdoor use only, aside from the Ooni Volt. Because the other models reach extremely high temperatures, they require appropriate ventilation and clearance on all sides for safe operation.

Can you use store-bought dough in Ooni pizza oven?

If you don’t have time to make homemade pizza dough, you can use store-bought dough in your Ooni. The brand even has a premade pizza crust mix that you can try.

What size pizza can you cook in Ooni 12?

As the name would suggest, you can cook 12-inch pizzas in the Ooni Koda 12. That being said, I’d recommend opting for smaller pies. Having that extra space inside the pizza oven allows for easier turning.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

I’m not the only one having a blast with the Ooni pizza oven. Thousands of reviewers rave about the amazing pizza they’ve cooked with it.

“So glad I took the plunge and ordered one,” writes Ooni reviewer, Kristina W. “Works like a charm and I love having pizza night with the family. The fact that I can tote it wherever to enjoy pizza is an even better bonus.”

The Ooni Koda 12 is the perfect size for our home,” adds Trina D., a verified Amazon reviewer. “My husband has been super excited to use it and has become of a sort of pizza aficionado. It connects to our propane tank and is easy to light. Not all pizzas have come out perfect but we are still learning and this has made pizza night more of a weekly thing. We love it.”

Product Comparison

The most direct comparison is the Ooni Koda 12’s big sister, the Ooni Koda 16. The two models function exactly the same, except the Koda 16 fits pies up to 16-inches. It also weighs more and takes up more space.

Ooni also offers models that use different fuel sources. The versatile Ooni Karu pizza oven comes in 12- or 16-inch sizes and runs on wood, charcoal or propane. There’s the 12-inch Ooni Frya pizza oven, which cooks pies using wood pellets. Finally, there’s the Ooni Volt; this electric pizza oven is perfect for indoor and outdoor use. Oh, and don’t forget about these handy Ooni pizza oven accessories, either!

Why You Should Trust Us

At Taste of Home, we’re pizza oven experts. We’ve spent over three years researching, testing and evaluating the top models on the market. Product reviewer Molly Allen has led the charge, testing 10 models to date. Molly has tried the dual-fuel Gozney Rocbbox, budget-friendly Solo Stove Pi Prime, rotating Blackstone pizza oven and even the new-to-market Gozney Arc. To supplement, our expert Test Kitchen team has reviewed the Cuisinart 3-in-1 pizza oven and Ninja Woodfire. I also bring 8 years of professional product testing experience to the table.

Final Verdict

If you’re tired of takeout or want a fun culinary project to try with your family, the Ooni Koda 12 is a worthwhile addition to your backyard oasis. It does take a little practice to figure out the right technique, but soon, you’ll be whipping up delicious pizzas that rival those from your favorite restaurant. Plus, this model is compact enough for travel, meaning you can take it tailgating, camping and more. After a year, my Ooni Koda 12 is still working great and looks as good as new. I can’t wait to continue making memories (and cheesy, saucy masterpieces!) with this outdoor appliance.

Where to Buy the Ooni Koda 12

The Ooni Koda 12 retails for $399. You can purchase the pizza oven on the Ooni website or from several other retailers, including Amazon, Williams Sonoma and BBQ Guys. While small, it sure makes mighty delicious pizzas!

I loved the Flaviar whiskey advent calendar so much that I had to try their quarterly whiskey subscription. As a whiskey connoisseur, I wanted a way to expand my palate on a budget and sample new types of whiskey. For those new to the spirits world, it can be overwhelming. Flaviar takes the stress out of diversifying your palate.

Through Flaviar’s whiskey subscription, I’ve sampled new spirits from around the globe that I wouldn’t have tried on my own. Every three months, I look forward to tasting three new whiskeys and a full-sized bottle to share with friends.

What Is the Flaviar Whiskey Subscription?

Flaviar is a spirits subscription that advances the opportunity to experience top-shelf whiskeys from around the world. Members can select from tasting boxes or full-size bottles.

Every quarter (every three months), spirits specialists skillfully curate a sampling box of liquor and deliver it to your doorstep, along with informational guides and tasting notes. The selection includes a mixture of customer favorites and rare, hard-to-find bottles. It’s easy to try new whiskey and other spirits from the comfort of your own home.

Flaviar’s signature offering includes a whiskey subscription delivered each quarter. Every three months on the “pay-as-you-go plan,” pay $100 per delivery ($400 a year) for one full-size 750 ml bottle and one themed three-vial tasting box. Prepay $320 for a year subscription and save $80 annually (each delivery costs $80 instead of $100).

If you’re solely looking for insider access as a spirits enthusiast, Flaviar Black is a new entry-level membership. For $40, you’ll receive first access to The Vault’s rare bottles, limited releases, deeper discounts on tasing boxes and bottles and free shipping on select items. This is ideal if you’re not seeking a recurring quarterly delivery.

A Flaviar Black membership is automatically included for one year if you purchase the signature whiskey subscription. Thus, Flaviar Black perks are extended beyond the “pay-as-you-go” subscription period. Flaviar also offers whiskey gift subscriptions.

Flaviar makes exploring a range of rare, hard-to-find whiskies a breezewithout leaving your living room.

Member perks include free shipping on any order over $60, discounts in the online liquor store, priority access to Flaviar original bottlings, free events, monthly access to The Vault, a community of spirits lovers, educational online resources, reviews, product and distillery outlines, cocktail recipes and distillery tours.

Flaviar’s online store sells over 15,000 spirits, including bourbon, Scotch, Irish whiskey and Japanese whisky. Other liquors include gin, rum and mezcal. The Vault offers members a private selection of exclusive bottles, original releases and rare, hard-to-find gems.

Whether you’re a spirit newbie, a seasoned aficionado or a casual sipper, Flaviar offers something for every drinker. Curated spirit samplers allow you to discover new favorites and expand your palate at an affordable price. Understand the nuances between each spirit and flavor with detailed tasting notes.

While Flaviar doesn’t offer a subscription option with only bourbon, it’s a stellar whiskey subscription. If you’re open to sampling varying kinds of whiskey alongside bourbon, it’s perfect. Note that Flaviar only offers a quarterly whiskey subscription at this time and has yet to expand to other spirits. However, their online store has rare full-sized bottles of various spirits.

Bourbon, whiskey and all spirits have an abundant history and specific lingo. Flaviar’s website is chock-full of dedicated articles and educational videos. Flaviar provides a community to connect with fellow spirits enthusiasts via forums and in-person and online events.

How We Tested It

How We Tested It

Three weeks after placing my order, a black and gold Flaviar branded cylindrical box containing five glass 50ml vials arrived at my door. With the tasting box, you can perform blind taste tests or preview tasting notes before sampling. Five circular cards detail each spirit’s composition. Note that the standard quarterly tasting box includes three glass 50ml vials. However, I selected the Flaviar Awards 2023 Tasting Box, containing five vials of the most frequently gifted spirits across Flaviar’s website in 2023.

Flaviar surprised me with a tasting box and a bottle of Penelope Bourbon’s ros cask finish whiskey. Unlike typical whiskey, this spirit is finished in French ros wine barrels, giving it a hint of sweetness. Only 2,400 bottles were produced. While I never would’ve picked this whiskey finished in ros casks for myself, I was pleasantly surprised.

I like to know what I’m sampling before I sip. I appreciate each spirit’s story, including the whiskey name, proof and region.

Twist the cap of each vial to break the safety tape seal, and pour up.

Before tasting, open your mouth and gently inhale. Make a mental note of what you taste. First on deck, vial “A” contained a pale gold Kyr rye whiskey from Finland, emitting notes of toasted rye bread, honey and wild berries at 94 proof. Aromas of vanilla, caramel, dried fruit, stone fruit and a rye earthiness filled the room. The finish is spicy with pepper, as notes of coffee and caramel linger. The full-sized bottle retails for $61.99 on Flaviar’s website.

I reset my palate to square one with water. On to tube “B,” an earthy 400 Conejos Mezcal from Mexico. It smells fresh and smoky. The taste is soft and smooth with flavors of a smoky agave.

Cleansing my palate again, I move on to “C,” a Frey Ranchbourbon from Nevada. I smell various fruits with mountain cherries, sourdough bread, vanilla, oak and turbinado. While this bottle retails for $47, the Flaviar Black price is $40.

“D” encases a Hercules Mulligan rye whiskey from New York.“E” includes a decade-old Hardy cognac from France, smelling of floralrose and jasminewith notes of fig, marzipan and warm humidor. This bottle retails for $142.

The online spirits store features a few of my favorite bourbons, including Blade & Bow and Buffalo Trace. Blade & Bow is 15% off its usual retail price, and Buffalo Trace is 10% off.

Pros

  • Thorough information about each spirit for club members
  • Admission to comprehensive online spirits community
  • Competitive pricing, and bargain pricing on rare bottles
  • Quarterly or annual subscription payment options
  • Can be gifted

Cons

  • Only 27 states in the delivery region
  • Shipping fee on orders less than $60

FAQ

What is the difference between bourbon and whiskey?

All bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon. Whiskey, also spelled whisky, is a blend of fermented grains (commonly corn, barley, rye or wheat)which are sometimes malted. Whiskey comes in various grades and varieties, classified by grain fermentation, distillation and aging in wooden barrels or casks. Whiskey is distilled around the world, i.e. Scotch or Irish whiskey.

All bourbon is made in the U.S. and consists of 51% corn, but most bourbons are closer to 70% corn. The remaining blend includes wheat or rye. It must be distilled at 160 proof or less and barreled at 125 proof or less. Legally bourbon must be aged for at least two years in a new charred oak barrel. 95% of bourbon is made in Kentucky. Beyond bourbon, there’s also malt whiskey, corn whiskey and blended whiskey.

Does Flaviar have bourbon?

Yes, Flaviar has whiskey made in the U.S. with a 51% minimum blend of corn. These bourbons are distilled at 160 proof or less, barreled at 125 proof or less and aged for at least two years in a new charred oak barrel.

Where does Flaviar ship from?

Flaviar ships from throughout the U.S. with a network of licensed retail partners. Your order ships from the vendor with the best price that is closest to you. Their vendors rely on various third-party courier services.

Flaviar delivers to 27 of 50 U.S. states, except for Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming. Note that shipping times vary regionally since most bottles are shipped by third-party vendors.

How much is a Flaviar membership?

For the best bargain, prepay $320 a year ($80 per shipment) for Flaviar’s whiskey subscription. This includes a tasting box and a full-sized bottle mailed to your door every quarter. That’s four shipments a year.

Or, pay $100 every three months ($400 per year) on the pay-as-you-go plan. To nix the whiskey subscription and receive insider access to the community and online store, purchase a Flaviar Black membership for $40.

What other reviewers/experts had to say

Thomas O. has really enjoyed his Flaviar subscription. “They have always sent me very good and interesting liquor. I have been able to try many different types and brands of liquor that in some cases I had never heard of.”

J Jeffery speaks highly of Flaviar’s customer service. “I bought the whiskey subscription as a gift for my husband. When he promptly received his first shipment, we had a question regarding the samples he received. Flaviar quickly responded and provided the answer.”

Wimbreth Carville swears by Flaviar’s advent calendar. “I’ve ordered the whiskey advent calendar three years in a row, and my husband loves it. I also order bottles occasionally.”

4 Best Kombucha Brand Options for a Healthy Gut https://www.tasteofhome.com/collection/best-kombucha/ Mon, 06 May 2024 18:22:25 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1986764 Kombucha is a fermented beverage that gives good bacteria back to the gut. We tested 6 different brands to find the 4 best kombucha options.

The post 4 Best Kombucha Brand Options for a Healthy Gut appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>

Pros:

  • 16 different flavors, including spicy and speciality blends
  • Organic, GMO-free, kosher, raw, gluten-free and certified vegan
  • Each bottle contains 1B probiotics at the time of bottling
  • No artificial carbonation methods used
  • Shelf-stable product (though it tastes better cold)
  • Includes under 0.5% alcohol by volume
  • Available in both bottles and cans

Cons:

  • 13 g added sugar
  • Taste may be too acidic for some

In our tests of the best kombucha options, one brand consistently outperformed the others in terms of taste, fizziness, benefits and flavor: Health Ade. Whether it’s a replacement for canned alcoholic drinks or a healthful option for those looking to boost their gut flora, Health Ade’s impressive catalogue of 15 different flavors like Cayenne Cleanse, Bubbly Rose, Mint Limeade and Guava Dragon Fruit offer options for every mood. It’s the closest we found to traditional kombucha in terms of taste, toothough the zippy, tart flavor may be too acidic for newbie booch heads.

Health Ade Kombucha

Health Ade is incredibly transparent about their brewing process, and they let each batch ferment for several weeks. That gives plenty of time for good bacteria (which averages at about 1 million per bottle) to feed, grow and release tons of tongue-tickling carbonation. At under 0.5% alcohol per bottle, it’s also safe for most folks to enjoy. Even better, it contains only around 70 calories per bottle, making it a much more waistband-friendly option than traditional soda. That said, with 13 grams of added sugar, it’s best to limit intake to one or two bottles a day.

Best Overall

Cuisinart Automatic Ice Cream Maker

Pros:

  • Incredibly easy to use
  • Churns out ice cream in a mere 20 minutes
  • Small footprint on the countertop
  • Easy to clean
  • Affordably priced

Cons:

  • Requires extra chilling if you want a firmer ice cream

When it comes to adding a new appliance to your kitchen, space is always a concern. If you want an ice cream maker with a small footprint, try the Cuisinart Automatic Ice Cream Maker. This appliance takes up about as much room as a blender (though shorter), and we say it’s worth every square inch.

This gadgetis incredibly easy to use. Freeze the canister overnight, then add your favorite ice cream recipe (we recommend this bourbon ice cream on a hot weekend afternoon). This machine will churn a batch of ice cream in 20 minutes. Says Ellie: “So fast and simple.”

Cuisinart Automatic Ice Cream Maker

The end result will have a velvety, soft serve-like consistency, according to Ellie, which is great for all you DQ fans. If you prefer a slightly firmer treat, Ellie recommends popping the finished product into the freezer for a bit before scooping and topping with hot fudge.

It combines hop oils and carbonated water for a distinctive kiss of herbal goodness in every sip, making it a worthy stand-in for NA beer, craft brews and sugary mocktails.

Athletic Daypack

Four core flavorsincluding black cherry, blood orange, lemon lime and mangooffer ample selections for every sipper at the tailgate or beach. Upon cracking open a can of black cherry, a fragrant black cherry soda scent with a sharp herbal-ness at the forefront fills the senses. While the fruit flavors themselves are rather muted on the palate, they mix incredibly well with the pine-like taste of the hops, making this an excellent pick for both budding hop heads and craft beer drinkers alike.

We Tested 12 Grill Brushes to Find the Best Brush for Gunky Grates https://www.tasteofhome.com/collection/best-grill-brush/ Thu, 02 May 2024 16:51:24 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1985459 We scraped, scrubbed and sponged away debris using 12 top-selling grill brushes. The best grill brush outperformed all of them.

The post We Tested 12 Grill Brushes to Find the Best Brush for Gunky Grates appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>

Pros:

  • Uses steam to clean without any wire bristles
  • Ergonomic, lightweight handle
  • Replacement heads available
  • Squishy sponge cleans the edges of the grates
  • Attached scraper for cooked-on bits
  • Wash by hand, in the dishwasher or by hose

Cons:

  • No hanging hook
  • Pricey, but frequently on sale

According to our tests, topping the list as the overall best grill brush is the Grill Rescue brush. This squishy-yet-sturdy cleaning sponge effortlessly eliminates stuck-on messes without any bristles at all. Unlike other options, it employs the power of steam rather than aggressive scrubbing or scraping. An ergonomic handle makes it easy to work back and forth, and a lightweight head keeps arms from feeling fatigued when the mess calls for a little extra elbow grease.

Simply dip the sponge head into water before the grill cools down, then get to work scrubbing back and forth along the grates. The water heats up to boiling temperatures, effectively melting off meat residue and sticky barbecue sauce. A notched scraper on the back of the sponge loosens any stubborn bits cooked onto the grill, meaning no wire bristles sticking to future meals.

With a durable plastic handle and a replaceable, spongy head that gets deep into edges, this grill brush is a grate (get it?) grilling tool. When finished, pop it into the dishwasher or rinse by hand (or hose) for easy cleanup. While the brush itself is rather pricey, it’s relatively easy to secure replacement heads once the current one wears out, though we didn’t detect any noticeable degradation during our limited testing.

It’s also worth noting that this one only works with heat, so it’s best for cleaning grills right after cooking.

HexClad vs. Caraway: How Do These Viral Cookware Brands Compare? https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/hexclad-vs-caraway/ Thu, 02 May 2024 00:47:07 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1984934 Sure, you've seen them both on social media. But we're here to settle the HexClad vs. Caraway cookware debate once and for all.

The post HexClad vs. Caraway: How Do These Viral Cookware Brands Compare? appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>
Trying to pick the right cookware for your kitchen is a dizzying experience. There are so many factors to consider: durability, nonstick performance, aesthetics and price. Add in the conversations around forever chemicals and heavy metals, and it might be tempting to just order takeout!

“Consider cookware that matches your cooking style, not just your budget,” says Executive Culinary Director, Sarah Farmer. “Ask: Is the cookware compatible with your stovetop? Do you plan to use the cookware for recipes that require finishing in the oven? If so, check the heat resistance. The limit for most nonstick pans is 500 degrees. And if youre on a save vs. splurge budget, look for the heavier cookware in your price range as its more durable and cooks more evenly than lightweight pieces. You might need to shell out a few more dollars, but the splurge is worth it in the long run.”

In recent years, social media has added to the equation with a slew of Instagram-famous cookware brandslike HexClad and Carawayendorsed by influencers and celebrities. But are these pans the holy grail they claim to be? Or just hype?

Here at Taste of Home, weve spent several months trying to answer that question. Our expert product testers have put both HexClad and Caraway through the paces. I’ve also extensively used both brands in my home kitchen. Heres what we found.

Whats the Difference Between HexClad and Caraway?

Hexclad Vs. Caraway Ssedit

HexClad and Caraway both sell nonstick cookware, knives and kitchen gear. While theres a good chance youve come across both brands on social media, thats where the similarities end.

HexClad focuses on hybrid cookware that combines the durability of stainless steel with the ease of nonstick. Its meant for rough, rugged performance, holding up to metal utensils and high heat. Plus, its backed by a lifetime warranty. (If you’re #TeamStainlessSteel, read up on HexClad vs. AllClad, too).

Caraway offers ceramic cookware and keeps aesthetics top of mind. Their pretty pans require more pampering, with suggested use on low to medium heat and with silicone utensils.

All About HexClad

Marketed as “the only true hybrid cookware,” HexClad has earned accolades from home cooks and professional chefs alike. Most notably, Gordon Ramsay endorses the brand.

Like many viral products, the brand relies on fancy marketing techniques and wow-worthy graphics. The Science page of their website is peppered with snippets about the iconic hexagon design and why it’s the last pan you’ll ever need to buy. While these factoids are interesting, the true test is performance.

I’ve been using HexClad since 2023. I was first introduced to the Dutch oven, followed by a knife set. Most recently, I purchased the brand’s 7-piece cookware set. Youll also find a HexClad pepper mill and pizza stone in my kitchen. Other Taste of Home writers have tested the hybrid skillet and wok.

Across the board? We’re impressed. HexClad cookware heats up quickly and provides an ideal surface for sauteing, searing, stir-frying and even baking. I’ve used my pans extensively to brown tofu, scramble eggs, mix pasta dishes, bake bread, cook veggie burgers, grill paninis, wilt greens, fajita veggiesthe list is endless. And, truthfully, I have yet to find a task HexClad can’t handle.

I will say that the nonstick coating is not the slickest surface I’ve used. I still need to grease with butter or oil for eggs and veggies. But if something does stick, it immediately lifts with a nudge of a spatula. Plus, I haven’t noticed a substantial difference in nonstick quality over the life of my pans. HexClad performs just as well after a year as it did on day one.

Cleanup is also a breeze. Any residue lifts away with a few passes from a sponge or a sprinkle of coarse salt. I choose to hand-wash my pans, but they are also listed as dishwasher safe.

All About Hexclad SseditKATIE BANDURSKI/TASTE OF HOME

Pros

  • Lives up to the “hybrid cookware” hype
  • Incredibly versatile
  • Safe for use at high heats and with metal utensils
  • Durable nonstick lasts longer than other brands on the market
  • Easy to clean and dishwasher safe
  • Lifetime warranty

Cons

  • Not the prettiest cookware on the market
  • Pricey

All About Caraway

Been on Instagram in the past few years? I can all but guarantee you’ve come across Caraway cookware.

This viral brand aims to set a new kitchen standard by creating products that utilize nontoxic ceramic rather than forever chemicals. These pans sure look pretty, but are they practical?

Ive been using Caraway cookware since 2021. I started with the Dutch oven and saute pan, and though both pieces have since retired from my kitchen, I am still using a frying pan from February 2024 and the Caraway food storage set. Other Taste of Home editors swear by the mini cookware and prep set.

Right out of the box, Caraway is a showstopper. I was shocked at how sturdy (and heavy!) each piece was. Oh, and that color? Truly stunning. This is cookware that’s meant to be displayed. The saute pan quickly became my go-to for cooking rice dishes, browning veggies, boiling one-pot pasta and frying eggs.

For several months, this pan was my right-hand man in the kitchen. But over time, I started deviating from the pan’s specific care instructions. I got impatient while cooking dinner and turned up the heat or I accidentally grabbed my metal tongs when my silicone-coated pair was dirty. This abuse began to eat away at the pan’s nonstick coating until I was left with permanent brown spots that even rigorous scrubbing couldn’t lift away. After three years, I retired the pan entirely.

In the name of science, I ordered a new Caraway frying pan. This time, I’ve been very careful to follow the instructions to a teeand so far, so good. Fresh out of the box, this pan offers one of the slickest coatings I’ve experienced. It’s perfect for scrambling eggs or cooking delicate proteins.

To clean, I simply wipe away any residue with a paper towel or run under warm water. While I prefer to hand-wash my pans anyway, Caraway cookware is not suitable for the dishwasher.

Pros

  • Incredibly beautiful cookware available in multiple colors
  • Very nonstick right out of the box
  • Sturdy construction
  • Nontoxic ceramic

Cons

  • Nonstick coating doesn’t last unless you use extreme caution
  • Not suitable for use on high heat or with metal utensils
  • Not dishwasher safe
  • Pricey

The Bottom Line

To settle the HexClad vs. Caraway debate, you need to first consider your priorities. Both brands make quality products but for different types of consumers.

HexClad is a good fit for anyone who doesnt want to think twice about using their cookware. If you like to sear steaks on high heat or scramble eggs with a metal whisk directly in the pan, this sturdy cookware is up for the task. I am notoriously hard on cookware, and this is the brand I prioritize in my home kitchen.

If youre a gentler cook, theres a lot to love about Caraway. The heavy, solid construction proves these pans can last if properly cared for. Ive yet to find a pan thats better at cooking fried eggs than my Caraway fry pan. Plus, those pops of pretty color are hard to beat. This is cookware thats not afraid to show off.

Gift-giving is my love language. And while I live for holidays, birthdays and anniversaries, I also find opportunities to show affection in the monotony of daily life. While the good timesa new job, a housewarming, an engagementare, of course, worth celebrating, the bad times deserve recognition, too. When a loved one faces a challenging circumstance, like illness or grief, it’s crucial to show support.

As an editor at Taste of Home, it’s no surprise that my go-to pick-me-up is food. I love baking cookies or whipping up a pot of soup for local friends and family, but it’s harder to soothe long-distance loved ones. Luckily, I found a hack: Say hello to Spoonful of Comfort.

What is Spoonful of Comfort?

Spoonful of Comfort is a women-owned online retailer specializing in care packages and food gift baskets. The brand is most famous for its soup delivery. But you can find all sorts of yummy comfort foods, including pies, cookies, rolls and mac and cheese. They even offer vegan and gluten-free options.

Plus, since a good care package includes more than just food, its easy to add blankets, socks, dog treats and even cookware to your order.

We Tried It

Get Well Soon Gift Package

Looking to send a little love? You can't beat a care package from Spoonful of Comfort. It's the perfect gift for a pal in need of a pick-me-up!

How We Tested It

For this review, I tried the Get Well Soon Gift Package. The care package arrived in April 2024.

When Im feeling under the weather, the last thing I want to do is cook. This bestselling care package for a sick friend makes sending a loved one a pick-me-up easy. A classic box includes 4-6 servings of soup or mac and cheese, six rolls, six cookies, a keepsake ladle and a personalized note card. You can also choose to double it up if you want to send a few extra servings.

Ordering Process

To order, start by choosing your flavors. When selecting my box, I could choose from seven options: Chicken noodle, tomato basil, broccoli cheddar, garden vegetable, poblano chicken chowder, mac and cheese or chicken and wild rice. For variety, there are also five combo options to choose from. I opted for the chicken noodle and mac and cheese duo. Next, youll select your preferred bread and cookie flavors. I went with Asiago rolls (which require a minimal additional fee) and chocolate chip cookies.

Before heading to checkout, you can level up your care package with various add-ons. There are options for healing giftslike a bedside bell or a tea and honey bundleas well as pet treats, soup toppers, blankets, books, puzzles, tea towels and self-care items. You can even add on a pie or a Dutch oven! The customization options are truly endless.

Unboxing

Unboxing

When my Spoonful of Comfort order arrived at my door, I was instantly impressed with the packaging. The exterior of the box was cheerful, complete with a friendly rooster print. On the inside, though, is where the packaging really shines. I was first greeted with the ladle attached to a piece of cardboard printed with the message Love by the spoonful. Next came instruction cards, a note and clearly labeled boxes for the soup, rolls and cookies. Each box was sturdy and printed with colorful interiors and inspirational quotes. Theyre perfect for re-using as gift boxes or even holding recipe cards and other doodads.

Unboxing

The soup was tucked inside a silver insulation bag to prevent leaks and was still partially frozen when it showed up on my doorstep. I popped it in the fridge to continue thawing, but if youre eager to eat right away you can defrost in the microwave.

Taste Test

Taste Test

For my first meal, I scooped some mac and cheese into a pan and warmed on medium heat until hot. Right away, I was shocked by how saucy it was. (Truthfully, it was too saucy for my tastesI wanted more noodles!) It was also incredibly rich. I was getting full after just a few bites. The mac did have a complex, cheesy flavor (it reminded me a bit of Panera mac and cheese) and the pasta was perfectly cooked.

The Asiago rolls and chocolate chip cookies were deliciousespecially when warmed in the oven for a few minutes per the package instructions. They really did remind me of the comfort foods my grandma used to make.

Taste Test

The chicken noodle soup, however, was the star of the show. I warmed the contents on the stove over medium-high heat, then transferred them to a bowl. The broth was peppered with herbs, and this soup doesnt skimp! There were plenty of chicken chunks, thick egg noodles and carrot rounds in each serving.

I dont typically eat meat, so I snuck a few bites of the noodles and carrots, which were perfectly cooked. Usually, chicken noodle soups are soggy, but this one still had a bit of an al dente bite, which was a delightful texture in contrast to the smooth, savory broth. My husband thought the chicken chunks were slightly dry, yet generously sized and filled with flavor.

Mini Pie Medley

Mini Pie Medley

In the name of sugar and science, I also tried one of the brand’s Mother’s Day offerings: The Mini Pie Medley. This selection includes four mini piesin flavors peach crumble, apple, strawberry rhubarb and mixed berryas well as a keepsake pie server, greeting card, personalized note and pretty packaging. Like the soup care package, you can add an assortment of items to personalize your gift further.

The pie medley arrived in the same box as the soup care package and was as beautifully packaged. The pies were nestled in a sturdy blue box and labeled for easy eating. Talk about an impressive gift basket for her!

Before digging in, I warmed the pies in a 375-degree oven for 15 minutes. This step was optional, but who doesn’t want warm pie?! After baking, you’re supposed to let the pies rest for 20 minutes so the filling can set. But I was a little impatient and cut into them after only 10 minutes of rest. As expected, some of the filling spread out.

I taste-tested these pies with my husband and parentsand our opinions were surprisingly unanimous. We all loved the mixed berry pie. The thick and sweet filling paired beautifully with the flaky, glazed crust. It truly tasted homemade. Thanks to the tart-sweet interior and coarse sugar-speckled crust, our second favorite was strawberry rhubarb. The apple and peach crumble were good but a little more basic than the other flavors. Pro tip: Be sure to serve with vanilla ice cream!

While this mini pie care package is currently sold out, you can still order a full-size pie or add one to any care package.

Pros

  • Beautiful care package for an under-the-weather friend
  • Impeccable packaging experience
  • Solid variety of soup flavors with restaurant-quality taste
  • Wide array of add-ons for a custom gift
  • Options for various dietary restrictions and preferences

Cons

  • Mac and cheese was a little too rich for my tastes
  • Pricey

FAQs

Does Spoonful of Comfort arrive frozen?

Sometimes! With overnight shipping or in cold climates, your soup may still be frozen when it shows up. However, per the brand’s website, each order is flash-frozen and secured in an insulated envelope with ice packs. It’s intended to thaw while en route and arrive cold to the touch.

Who founded Spoonful of Comfort?

Marti Wymer founded the brand in 2008 after her mother’s cancer diagnosis. You can get the full scoop on the brand’s About Us page.

Product Comparison

Ive tried many care packages from brands like Harry & David, Olive & Cocoa, Happy Box, Sugarwish and Gourmet Gift Baskets. I’ve tested selections with all kinds of treats, from chocolate to cheese and coffee. These brands are all a bit pricey for what you get, but they create a gifting experience thats hard to beat. Plus, its still cheaper than assembling and shipping your own care package.

Value-wise, Spoonful of Comfort is right in line with its competition. You can send a thoughtful gift to an ill friend for about $100 (plus $13 for 2-day shipping). Is it cheaper than placing an order for DoorDash or Instacart? No. But is it more thoughtful? Absolutely. The packaging alone (plus that restaurant-quality chicken noodle soup!) will have me ordering again.

Final Verdict

You can’t beat a care package for a loved one who’s going through it. The Get Well Soon Gift Package from a Spoonful of Comfort is my go-to gift basket thanks to its filling and quality food items, thoughtful packaging and endless add-ons. While on the pricey side, I love that it’s more practical than a flower delivery and a solid substitute for homemade comfort food.

Best Overall Food Processor

Cuisinart Pro Custom 11-Cup Food Processor

Pros:

  • Two slicing disks, shredding disk and chop blade
  • Thin, uniform slices
  • Compact for storage
  • Includes plastic spatula
  • Includes work bowl with cover
  • Rubber grippy pads prevent slips
  • Easily mixes thick dough

Cons:

  • Least intuitive setup
  • Sleeve and food pusher do not come apart

Capacity: 11 cups | Settings: On, Off, Pulse | Power: 625 watts | Size: 7 x 11.5 x 14.5 in. | Cord length: 31.5 in. | Weight: 12.75 lbs. | Warranty: Full 5-year motor warranty, Limited 3-year unit warranty | Dishwasher safe: All parts except motor

According to our tests, topping the list as the overall best food processor is the Cuisinart Pro Custom 11-Cup Food Processor. Like our Test Kitchen’s favorite food processors, this option offers the perfect mix (get it?) of functionality and value. It performed so well in our tests that Product Testing Team Manager Annamarie Higley noted “there’s a reason why you think of Cuisinart when you think of a food processor.”

Apart from its easy-to-stash size and conveniently hefty weight that prevents it from slipping and sliding, we appreciate that this sturdy system looks as lovely as it runs. While it didn’t impress while slicing up mozzarellaa difficult feat for any food processorthe Cuisinart created very uniform slices and chops. It even excelled at mixing pastry dough, outperforming all the rest of the food processors with little effort.

Cuisinart Pro Custom 11 Cup Food Processor

While burdened with a slightly difficult setup that’s not very intuitive and a sleeve and pusher that don’t come apart, once users get the hang of assembly the learning curve evens out. This model even makes buttery-smooth pesto in a pinchthe pieces of herbs were really small and the ingredients blended together nicely. Even given the five star performance, it’s still not the most pricey model on our list, making it a great value that we expect to last through years of use.
